***This is an advanced level course: learners must have either taken my previous ASL classes (Beginner ASL 1-4, Intermediate ASL 1-6, and Advanced ASL 1) or taken comparable classes elsewhere. In this 5-week course, your child will strengthen their conversational skills in American Sign Language. Learners will interact both with me, the instructor, as well as their fellow classmates. Each week we will review a different category of signs: Week One: Health related: healthy, sick, throw up, pain, headache, improving, declining, passed away, doctor, nurse, appointment, hospital General: something/someone, strict, allow, against the law, expand, substitute/swap out/instead, all-gone/depleted, everything, normally, tend-to, since/up-until-now Week Two: General: Messed-up, exhausted, inspired, grateful, proud, beautiful, music, movie, record video Locations: City, state, country, Earth, world, universe Week Three: Materials: metal, rubber, plastic, wood, paper, fabric. General: letters, numbers, strict teacher, take-it-easy, relax, stress, nervous Week Four: Common phrases: from time to time, thought of something, lose it (temper), in trouble, stubborn/hard-headed, wracking my brain, beat around the bush, I beat you, go to bed, falling behind, bullying, silly, line up, give up, my turn, your turn Chores: laundry, wash dishes, cleaning, vacuum, mop floor, sweep, set table, mow lawn, take out trash, wash car, feed pet, make bed, Week Five: Review concepts from weeks 1-4.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
I live in the Pacific Northwest and I am a licensed Speech Language Pathology Assistant. Most of the year, my job involves helping elementary school children learn to communicate clearly by making the right sounds come out of their mouths. However, I’m also passionate about communicating without any sound at all—using American Sign Language (ASL).
I discovered the world of sign language when I was 11 years old—and I was instantly hooked! The thought that my friends and I could speak to each other without saying a word was so intriguing to my young self. I learned more ASL in high school and college, and even traveled to Washington DC to take an ASL course at Gallaudet University, a school dedicated to the education of Deaf students. I went on to graduate with honors from Oregon’s Portland State University, earning my bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences.
I have worked with Deaf children in school programs across California, Oregon, and Arizona, and I love communicating in sign language! I am easily excited and love to talk, and this helps me connect with my speech students as well as my ASL Outschool students. A student enrolled in my class can expect an engaging, hands-on (pun intended) learning experience.
I look forward to working with your learner!
