Summary, Paraphrase, & Direct Quotes: Using Sources (Writer's Workshop)
Class experience
You've done the research, but now you have to incorporate it into your own writing. There are many ways to use outside sources in writing. This class will teach the difference between summary, paraphrase, and direct quotes and give writers the confidence to use all three methods well. Learners will also get to practice. If students have research papers they're working on, they can bring them to class to use for the workshop portion. Otherwise, they can work with example texts. Learners...
I LOVE teaching writing! I have been teaching people to write for the past ten years, mostly as a college professor but also in high school programs and after school programs for elementary students. Writing is my passion because I think that it gives people the opportunity to have their voice heard and see their thoughts in a way that allows them to become clearer thinkers with more confidence in their ideas. My teaching philosophy is that everyone can write because everyone has something to say that’s worth hearing. I have worked with high school and college students in classes ranging from remedial to honors, and my philosophy is the same: treat students with respect, value what they have to say, and help them say it well.
A handout about summary, paraphrase, and direct citation for future reference will be included.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I teach writing, philosophy, literature, critical reading, research, and cultural studies. You can learn more about my teaching philosophy and approach to learning at my website Dayla Learning (www.daylalearning.com) or on Facebook...
