Star Wars Philosophy Camp: May the Force Be With You? (Ages 10-14)
Nathan Dowell, MA
We will discuss the philosophy of the Star Wars movies, such as what is the Force, Jedi philosophy, whether droids (complex machines) can be persons, etc.
Duration: This is a two-week course and we will meet twice a week. Discussion-based: Students will learn about and discuss various philosophical questions, positions and traditions as they are related to the Star Wars universe, including the nature of the Force, the nature of free will, Jedi philosophy, and whether droids can think. Description Class Experience What will the students learn? - Students will learn how to apply key philosophical concepts and positions to the Star Wars’...
- Students will be more familiar with broad philosophical areas such as metaphysics (the nature of reality), epistemology (the study of knowledge), ethics (the nature and knowledge of right and wrong, good and bad), etc. -Students will be more familiar with different philosophical positions and traditions. - Students will be able to better critically think about a film and what ideas that the film is presenting for consideration. - Students will be able to better argue using philosophical concepts and see the strengths and weaknesses in various philosophical positions.
I have two M.A.’s in philosophy (one from Yale) and am in a PhD program in philosophy (The Ohio State). I also have been teaching research, critical thinking skills and philosophy in a university setting for 5 yrs. as well as taught how to interact with various subjects in texts while teaching ESL to younger children for the past 3yrs.
No supplies are required from the student. Everything will be briefly explained and then discussed in class. Students should have a basic knowledge of the Star Wars films (especially the original trilogy, but some topics will be discussed from the prequels and recent trilogy as well).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will watch some short movie clips from YouTube from the Star Wars' movies. If you have seen the movies, you will know that none of these clips will contain objectionable material. Also, we will discuss various religious concepts of God as we discuss the nature of the Force (is the Force best understood as either pantheistic, panentheistic or theistic). This is just a discussion of how to understand the Force. It does not in any way argue for a particular religion or even conception of God.
