Class Experience

C and K and CK all make the same sound so how do I know which one to use when spelling my word? This is a very common question kids have when learning how to spell words. The answer is actually quite easy. There are simple rules to tell us which letter(s) we use to spell these words. In this two day class, we will explore all of those rules. Students will learn whether to use c or k at the beginning of a word as well as k, ck, or ke at the end of a word. Do I spell back as bac, bak, back, bake? After attending this class that question will be easy to answer!

Day #1 Goals:
- learn the short and long vowel rules
- learn the rules for using ck, k, or ke at the end of a word
- practice reading and spelling words with the /k/ sound at the end of a word

Day #2 Goals:
- review rules from yesterday
- learn the rules for using c or k at the beginning of a word
- practice reading and spelling words with the /k/ sound at the beginning of a word

Each day of instruction will involve students learning the rules for spelling through discussion, google slides with visuals and graphics, videos and/or songs, interactive activities, and application of the new skills. Students will leave class with the knowledge of how to spell words with the /k/ sound and resources to help them remember and continue to apply the rules to future writing projects. Students will also become stronger readers after learning the short and long vowel rules and various spellings for the /k/ sound. The ability to sound out and spell new words will be much stronger.

This class is best suited for students who already know all of the letter sounds, including vowel sounds. I recommend this class for first and second graders. Kindergarten students who are working above grade or third grade students who are working below grade level could possibly also benefit from this class.
