What's included
11 live meetings
8 hrs 15 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This course is a continuation of the first 16 weeks of student piano lessons and will build on the fundamentals of music students have already learned. Students will continue their lessons without a break in the material or a shift in curriculum. Week 1 will discuss the grand staff, bass and treble clefs, and what lines and spaces mean to music reading. Students will practice Lesson Book page 36 and Theory Book page 26 for homework. Week 2 will review what students practiced the previous week. Students will begin playing pieces with both hands together, will learn how to count in 3/4 time, and will use body movements to feel the 3/4 beat of the waltz. They will practice Lesson Book page 38 and Theory Book page 29 for homework. Week 3 will review what students practiced the previous week and students will learn to read treble clef note G and will begin learning how to identify three different notes on the grand staff in one piece. Students will practice Lesson Book page 41 and Technique Book pages 20-21 for homework. Week 4 will review what students practiced the previous week and students will practice using different fingerings for notes they have learned previously. Students will practice Lesson Book page 43 and Technique Book page 22 for homework. The following 7 weeks will continue in a similar format based on the pace of the students as they learn to read basic music on the grand staff. Students will play many pieces, some of which have traditional tunes with which they may be familiar, and they will learn a bit of music history. Learning to play with others early in their music lessons is beneficial to their understanding of an ensemble, it teaches them to follow along with music even when they aren't playing, and it increases student confidence of playing in front of others. Upon completion of this course, students should have a thorough, basic knowledge of beginning piano and should be able to sight read beginner-level music.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I thoroughly enjoy teaching, and I'm excited to offer you music classes, experiential science classes, book clubs, and more! I have taught dozens of music students in individual piano lessons and group music classes, and I have taught at Walnut Hill Day School (KY), as well as at Mount Hermon Outdoor Science School (CA). I have discovered that the common thread connecting my favorite jobs over the years hasn't been around a particular subject matter, but simply around teaching itself. I think teaching is an incredible way to inform, educate, and elicit change to transform our world, one student at a time. Aside from teaching, some of my other favorite activities include biking, hiking, exploring the great outdoors, rock climbing, cooking, baking, and spending time with my family. I look forward to meeting you and learning about your interests too!
