The last day of class serves as the assessment. Students will put everything they have learned together, will wear a costume to the final class if desired (please cover for protection during makeup application), then student MUAs and their Mentor MUA will apply their SFX makeup together. Teacher will continue to guide students to ensure every student MUA is able to execute their look!Class Experience
Curriculum (Schedule by day) Day 1. Planning and Design First, we teach students how to visualize their characters and then utilize a facechart and/or vision board to plan and sketch their designs. Day 2. Safety and Maintenance Students then learn the importance of safety. We teach how to safely use and maintain makeup tools and products. We will also cover how to do swatches to check for possible allergic reactions. We also continue to enhance our face chart and/or vision board sketches. Day 3. SFX Makeup Techniques Students learn how to use simple tools like cotton balls, paper towels, wax, spirit gum, liquid latex, and fake blood to create special effects makeup. Day 4. Photography, Videography, and Editing Students will learn basic photography and videography. We teach how to organize and build a professional portfolio of our artistry. Students will also continue to work on their designs. Day 5. SFX Tips, Tricks, and Q&A with the Teacher Teacher will prepare students for the makeup application class by teaching and demonstrating tips and tricks and giving the students an opportunity to ask questions. Additionally, students will learn how to clean and prepare the skin for the makeup application class. Day 6. SFX Makeup Application We then teach professional creative makeup application to bring our own SFX looks to life. Teacher will demonstrate how to use makeup and skin safe paints to realistically create special effects makeup. Students are encouraged to follow along creating their own design or are welcome to recreate the teacher's design. Students will put together and show off their looks! In addition to the Q&A class, each class is structured so that the topic is covered and/or demonstrated and then students and teachers discuss each topic together. Student can also ask questions during class. Teachers always review and check for understanding. Welcome to MUA Co-op School of Makeup Artistry, where creativity meets empowerment! We invite aspiring makeup artists, makeup enthusiasts, cosplay lovers, and theater students to embark on an exciting journey into the world of special effects makeup. We teach aspiring makeup artists, makeup enthusiasts, cosplay lovers, and theater students how to use makeup artistry & household items to complete special effects makeup looks on a budget. All skill levels are welcomed and encouraged to participate! Our approach is centered on empowerment. Student MUAs are encouraged to execute an SFX makeup look of their own choosing. However, students may choose to follow on directly with the teacher's example. Students will learn by verbal instruction and live demonstration of the complete process. We aim to help MUAs have fun, express their authentic self, cultivate self-love and respect, boost confidence, and foster community among fellow artists. Above all, we want students to explore the vast realm of their creativity and experience the joy of self-expression through makeup artistry! All skill levels are welcomed and encouraged to participate! In each class, we prioritize interactive learning. Our teachers provide comprehensive instruction and demonstrations, followed by open discussions and ample time for questions. Throughout each live demonstration, students are encouraged to participate by following along. Mentor MUAs will observe and assist the class to ensure all student MUAs are successful in executing each technique. We encourage creativity, self-expression, and a strong sense of community, fostering an environment where MUAs can truly thrive as artists. Here's a breakdown of our immersive Special Effects Makeup Camp curriculum: Day 1: Planning and Design Learn how to visualize and bring to life your unique characters. First, we teach students to visualize their characters Then student MUAs discover the art of planning and design by sketching designs using vision boards and facecharts. Day 2: Safety and Maintenance Delve into the crucial aspects of safety and sanitization. Gain knowledge on how to safely use, maintain, and sanitize makeup tools and products. Learn how to perform skin swatches to check for possible allergic reactions. Continue refining your face chart or vision board sketches. Day 3: SFX Makeup Techniques Dive into the world of special effects makeup techniques beginning with SFX wound application. Student MUAs master the use of everyday and professional makeup tools like cotton balls, paper towels, spirit gum, liquid latex, and fake blood to create realistic SFX wound effects. Day 4: SFX Prosthetics Explore the realm of prosthetic application, including pre-made and homemade prosthetics. Student MUAs will learn how to apply pre-made prosthetics, as well as learn how to use latex and makeup tools to make their own custom prosthetics to achieve seamless SFX effects. Day 5: Brow Blocking, Bodypaint, Q&A, and Final Preparations Learn the technique of brow blocking, a common practice required in many SFX makeup looks. Student MUAs will then learn the difference and uses of different makeup bodypaint options and how to apply them for a flawless finish. Students will have time to engage their MUA Mentor in a Q&A session to address any lingering questions. Finally, students will receive instruction for skin preparation for the grand finale! Day 6: SFX Makeup Application The pinnacle of your journey! Take part in a group SFX makeup application experience! Student MUAs will put all they've learned to work as they use their creativity to bring to life their creative vision in a one of a kind SFX masterpiece! Students may be required to use scissors, liquid latex, fake blood, prosthetics, spirit gum. Parental supervision is advised.
Please be aware of possible allergic reactions.
Please be aware that makeup artists often utilize their neck and chest as a canvas for bodypaint. Students and teachers may wear a sleeveless shirt.
Supply List
Teacher will provide a detailed list of products and tools they will be using. We have provided a detailed supply list which includes professional and budget friendly options. However, teachers emphasize ingenuity and improvisation. There are ways to achieve a look with substitutions and students may ask about suitable household or drugstore substitutions. Additionally, students receive a printable facechart and vision board. Students will need a quiet, organized, well lit workspace with a mirror.
