Class Experience

US Grade 2
Are you ready to supercharge your year? During this ongoing course, learners will be given an introduction to a wide variety of second grade skills, each connecting to a nature theme (bugs, plants, animals). Each 45 minute class will highlight a specific skill, so learners are able to enroll in the whole course, or pick and choose the weeks' topics that are needed most to prime the learner for second grade, or give them a great stepping stone for third grade. Please note: This is an introductory course. Learners will be exposed to the weekly topic, but mastery is not expected. Engagement with the topic and building excitement about math is the goal! The topic for the week will be posted in the classroom prior to each meeting. Each weeks' topic is below:

Week of March 12 - Week 9 - Counting Money up to $2.00 with Like and Unlike Coins (American Currency System)
Week of March 19 - Week 1 - Skip Counting Forward and Backward by 2, 5, and 10
Week of March 26 - Week 2 - Place Value to the Ones, Tens, and Hundreds Place
Week of April 2 - Week 3 - Addition Fluency to 20
Week of April 9 - Week 4 - Subtraction Fluency Within 20
Week of April 16 - Week 5 - Geometry (Faces, Edges and Vertices of Plane and Solid Shapes)
Week of April 23 - Week 6 - Graphing and Analyzing Up to 15 Data Points on a Bar Graph
Week of May 7 - Week 7 - Fractions (Halves, Thirds, Fourths, Sixths, and Eighths)
Week of May 14 - Week 8 - Time to the Hour, Half Hour, and Quarter Hour

This class is taught on a loop, so once Week 9 is completed, the class will begin again at Week 1.

Each week learners will:
1) Learn classroom norms/goals, introduce themselves, preview the weekly theme (5-10 min)
2) Engage in mental addition and subtraction fluency practice (5-8 minutes)
3) Review the learning goal for class and learn skills and strategies (10 minutes)
4) Practice independently with teacher support (10 minutes)
5) Review through a game/group activity (5-7 minutes)
Note: This course does utilize games like Kahoot, Nearpod, and Blooket

**Note: Depending on timing and the number of learners, this class may last longer than 45 minutes. I do allow for socialization, as it leads to more engagement and excitement around math. If time is running low, students will be invited to stay for the game portion if they wish, but it is not required.

Through modeling, interactive discussion, and games, learners will come away from each class with a great starting point to continue expanding their knowledge. Learners will be engaged with themes each class, including plants, animals, and insects. Each learner will receive hands-on practice through a teacher created handout aligning with each lesson to continue their learning. The OPTIONAL handout is used for support, and may not be utilized during each class depending on timing and the number of learners.
Learning Goals
By the end of the course, learners will be familiar with each of the topics discussed so they will be ready to start their second grade year, or will enter third grade with a strengthened foundation.

Hello Outschool Families and Learners!
I am excited to bring you a variety of fun and exciting courses across subject areas, but I have a passion for connecting reading and math to nature and the outdoors. I have been teaching for 8 years now, and am certified to teach Pre-K through 6th grade in all subjects. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching. My personal teaching philosophy revolves around helping students find connections in what they are learning to what the are passionate about. For me, that might mean using measurement and observation to take care of houseplants, or reading to research which of my favorite animals would win in a competition against one another.

When it comes to math, I find that guiding students through strategies that they can apply to many types of problems allows them to use critical thinking skills, take risks, and find the strategies that are most efficient without memorizing algorithms. In reading, I use several strategies from the Science of Reading to meet the needs of all learners. My phonics classes include explicit instruction and many examples so students can feel successful tackling new words, knowing exactly which rules those words may follow.

Finally, I firmly believe that time in nature allows children to hone important skills like observation, patience, self regulation, coordination, and independence. I spend time that I'm not teaching with my family, while also tending to my small planter garden, my 50+ houseplants, or my six backyard chickens. I hope to see you in class soon!
