Class Experience

Introduction to the Experiment: 5 minutes
Learners will be introduced to the background (previous research) regarding the experiment we will be conducting. Here it is the acid-base reaction.

Write our Purpose: 10 minutes
Learners will have a chance to use the background information given to write a purpose of the experiment (with help from the teacher where needed)

Write the Hypothesis: 10 minutes
Learners will make a hypothesis regarding what they think will happen during the experiment.

List our Materials: 10 minutes
Learners will list the materials we will be using. This will also be an opportunity to setup some measurements of the ingredients we will use. The experiment will be about the ratios of acid to base. Learners will be encouraged to set their own measurements they would like to test, but will be provided guidance where needed.

Write our Procedures: 25 minutes
Learners will be guided through how the experiment will be set up. They will write the procedure that they will follow during the experiment.

Conduct the Experiment: 20 minutes
Learners will use the materials list and procedures they wrote to conduct the experiment.

Write the Results: 15 minutes
Learners will write what they observed - to include measurements of the balloon expansion and any other observable changes. We will also use graphing paper to allow visual representation of the data found.

Write our Conclusions: 10 minutes
We will use a class discussion to help guide learners to a conclusion they will write out.

Discussion on the Greater Implications: 10 minutes
Learners and teacher will have a discussion on how these results and conclusions could be used in other ways.

Parental Guidance
1. Common vinegars are weak acids that contain 4 to 8 percent acetic acid, which can erode the skin and cause minor chemical burns if applied and left on the skin in large amounts under occlusion (which we will not be doing in this experiment). Although this risk is minor, learners will be instructed to wash their hands after dealing with vinegar to mitigate this risk. 2. While it's generally not harmful, baking soda can irritate the skin. Most people don't know they are sensitive to baking soda until they start applying it directly to their skin. We will not be applying the baking soda to our skin, but we will be washing our hands after the application of baking soda to mitigate any risk of a rash. 3. Baking powder is considered nontoxic when it is used in cooking and baking. However, serious complications can occur from overdoses or allergic reactions. Learners will not be eating any baking powder during this experiment. Hand washing will be instructed after handling baking soda. **Overall, none of the ingredients used in this experiment are considered harmful in the context of their use, we will be washing our hands after their use for safety. If your learner may have allergies it is recommended that they where gloves during the experiment to mitigate any risk.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! am a scientist and adventurer. I have a Masters degree in Animal Science with minors in Chemistry and Fish & Wildlife. I started my journey investigating sheep and goats, went on to study shrimp and zooplankton, and have many years of experience teaching STEM to students from preschool up to college.
The classes that I am currently teaching cover Food Science, Animal Science, Ichthyology, STEM experiments, and Women in STEM.
All my classes are anchored in exciting themes such as "Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse through STEM", "Interesting Animals from A to Z", and "Microscopic Adventures!". I generally have a short presentation which I try to keep 5-10 minutes long with the rest of the class time working with hands on learning. I create all my own high-quality material that your students will enjoy engaging with. My classroom is inclusive to all.
Interesting facts about myself:
1) I am an identical twin.
2) I have studied seabirds in Antarctica.
