Class Experience

Class content builds from one day to the next, so consistent, on-time attendance is expected. Learners will not be dropped from the class for missing a day, but are responsible for watching the recording and trying the activities so they will not be lost moving forward.

Learners should already be familiar with area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and squares, common factors, and fraction representations and calculations. These topics will be lightly reviewed as needed, but learners who are hearing about them for the first time will struggle to use them as steps or to notice when they are applicable.

Each session will begin with warm-up problems applying related previous skills. After that, learners will watch demonstrations of processes like geometric constructions, apply those processes and others from their previous knowledge to figures and ratios, examine the results from their work and others', and discover patterns.

Learning Goals

Learners will use GeoGebra construction features.
Learners will decompose rectangles into squares.

Parental Guidance
GeoGebra Classroom is a free site running the open-source GeoGebra dynamic geometry software in such a way as to sync to the cloud and allow the teacher to view learners' work. Accounts which allow learners to sign back in with full access to previous work are offered, but not required. Learners need to give a name either when entering the class code or when setting up their accounts so that I can find their work in the teacher interface; if they wish, such as for added privacy, a nickname or pseudonym is OK. Explain Everything is a shared whiteboard, similar to Google Jamboard but more flexible. Learners do not need an account and can access the board to write on it through a link. Learners who do not specifically want to write on the board don’t need to access Explain Everything at all – I will share the screen in Zoom and they can watch.
External Resources

Sources
Some activities are adapted from Illustrative Math, Grade 6, Unit 9, Lesson 3. This is an end-of-year unit including above grade level concepts as well as topics not always included in the school curriculum, so the unit's grade level should not be considered a limitation on who could learn something new.
