Homework
1-2 hours per week. A practice assignment will be given after class. It is recommended this assignment is followed in order to reinforce the material covered in the lesson.Class Experience
This private trial lesson is perfect for learners ages 6-18 of any level! This course will focus on all aspects of the piano--reading, technique, and artistry--as well as supplemental music theory and ear-training. Students may only enroll once in this discounted course. If the student wishes to continue after the trial lesson, they may enroll in other piano courses found on my profile. Class Structure: This is a one-on-one course, meaning students will receive individualized attention and instruction. Students will attend class at their own keyboard or piano and actively participate. Mics will be unmuted for all of class. I have two cameras, one with a side view and another with a close-up view of my hands. Class materials will be shared to the screen, or students may provide their own materials. After the lesson, students will be provided with a practice assignment and any necessary materials to make sure they are able to continue progressing on their own. Curriculum: Regardless of the individual goals my students present, I maintain a strong emphasis on technique, attention to detail, and practice methods. In this way, students are able to be independent in the time between lessons, and gain the capability of learning pieces on their own without risk of injury. My background is primarily classical piano, and I also enjoy teaching the art of reading chord charts and interpreting pop music; additionally, I have over 10 years of church piano experience as piano accompanist and organist for several different denominations. Texts will be recommended after speaking with students and understanding their goals. Teaching Philosophy: As a teacher, my largest and most immediate goal is to create a healthy growing space. As a music teacher, I strive to do this on both a personal and pianistic level. I begin by making sure I understand each student's goals in order to create an individualized curriculum. In the case of recurring lessons, the student and I will occasionally revisit these discussions in order to assess our progress, and to make sure that these goals have not shifted. During lessons, I strive to maintain a positive and energetic environment. Lessons can be intimidating for many, but it is important to not view corrections and critique as an indicator of failure--rather, they provide potential to become a better player and musician. After lessons, I provide notes to make sure students know how to practice throughout the week and have clear objectives towards which they should work. Parental Involvement: Adult help may be necessary for some students, depending on their prior piano experience and learning style. However, it is recommended that the student complete the course without adult help when possible, except in the case of technical difficulties. Required Knowledge/Experience: Students of all levels of knowledge and experience may enroll. Cancellation Policy: 24 hours' notice must be given in order to reschedule a lesson.
