Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and Welcome! I'm Teacher Joy. I've just completed my 27th year as an educator. I have taught Kindergarten and 1st Grade for twenty-six of those years and 3rd Grade for one year. Teaching our leaders of tomorrow is my passion! I love teaching and opening the door to a lifetime love of learning for all students! I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education K-6 with a concentration in Communicative Arts as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. I have served as a Cooperating Teacher to new Student Teachers, a Mentor Teacher and a Peer Evaluator. I have participated in a wide range of Professional Development throughout the years including such topics as Teaching Foundational Reading Skills, Literacy for a Lifetime and The Dynamic Duo: Effective Math Instruction at its Core.

The Early Education classes that I focus on include Letter Knowledge, Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Grammar, Reading Comprehension (independently and Teacher Read Aloud), Vocabulary, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Mathematic Awareness, and Social Skills. My teaching philosophy is to involve and engage our students in active learning across the curriculum. I firmly believe in a Balanced Curriculum with the fundamentals being introduced and mastered at an early age and know that it is key to student achievement. Among these activities is to allow students an opportunity to engage in active learning strategies like hands on learning, learning through play, learning with visual aides, activities focused on fine and gross motor skills, creative opportunities with music, dancing and art. This will promote a well rounded young learner.

I'm married with two daughters , one just graduating from college in May pursuing a career in Political Science and my other daughter beginning her Freshman year in high school. I love reading, traveling and spending quality time with my family and friends as much as possible. I truly love teaching, getting to know and help my students and most importantly having a positive impact on each student. I look forward for the opportunity to work with your child!
