Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Projeckt 1065 is a masterpiece of blending a spy novel, historical realistic fiction, deceit in order to gain insider's knowledge, necessary risks to save family, others, and oneself and incredible writing that weaves a classic story line told through the point of view of a teenager, a style that Alan Gratz has perfected in order to show the reader the change he / she can make in the world. The main character, MIchael, and his family from Belgium are spies- a secret Michael must keep while playing a crucial role in the plot in order to play the part of a Hitler Youth in order to gain critical knowledge, especially about Projekt 1065, even though he clearly despises all Hitler and his youth programs stand for. Infiltrate, befriend, and sabotage are key to the plot of this edge-of-your seat novel that shows Mr. Gratz's perfection in building tension and suspense through cliffhangers, important themes, inner conflict along with conflict with Nazi party members and who can / cannot be trusted, historically realistic details, deep character motives, and characters that will come to life for the reader with the voice and depth of what they are dealing with in order to reach their goals and search for survival. This novel contains powerful characters, created by Gratz,, that will have you rooting for the protagonists and leave you searching for clues when the plot takes critical plot twists that the reader will not see coming. This is classic Alan Gratz. Discussions become the focus of the class time including emphasis on conflicts, turning points, cliffhangers, voice, character motives, the role of children in the war, figurative powerful language, and decisions made by antagonists as the war began its decline for them.

All classes involve the positive and thoughtful treatment of each other, valuing all members of our learning community and the ideas that are shared. We treat each other with respect and kindness and build upon the ideas of the group. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT LEARNERS READ THE SECTIONS OF THE NOVEL THAT ARE ASSIGNED FOR EACH WEEK AND LISTED IN THE HW SECTION OF THE CLASS DESCRIPTION. A PDF will be sent for some note taking while reading the chapters in order to better organize learner's thoughts and ideas for the discussions.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This course is for mature learners as the true-to-life topics include intolerance, actions by Hitler youth organizations, spies, violence, intolerance, "grooming" to follow leaders at all costs, death at many times during the plot, violent mistreatment, an overall goal of dehumanization based on heritage and beliefs, and the action of resistance fighters. As if often the case in Alan Gratz novels, the main characters are primarily young teens, again accurate to the actual history of this time period. This is a fascinating book that teachers a historical accurate plot that encompasses much research done by the author. It may lead to excellent opportunity for family discussion and you may find the learner wanting to talk about it beyond the class . I suggest adults in the home community gain some knowledge on the contents via commonsense.org and / or Amazon. This book is powerful, accurate, truthful and presents a strong opportunity to understand the critical importance of decision making, standing for what is right, and the ultimate question of when do you put your life on the line to save others- the ultimate sacrifice.

I have taught this subject through novels to 5th and 6th graders for over 32 years plus have studied with a world-renowned expert in the field who teaches at a college near my location. I also have experience bringing a survivor of this time period to my classes to speak to students and adults from home for over 20 years. I have no plans to bring in a guest speaker at this time as the guest speakers that I use prefer to speak to groups larger than 10 people although learners can certainly check out the Shiloh project, Originated by Steven Spielberg, containing
thousands of audio and video recordings stored at the Holocaust Museum of Washington DC In order to hear firsthand from survivors.I am aware of the questions that can arise, the thoughts students bring forward and the emotions. My past experience leads to a very strong and solid understanding of the types of responses that can occur during a book like this and the sensitivity that is needed to make this a safe environment for everybody.
