Class Experience

When my oldest son was young, he loved card games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon. As a homeschool mom (and a former math major), it didn't take long for me to realize that he had to use a lot of math to play these games. I quickly incorporated card games into our daily lessons. With our subsequent children, the tradition continued. Our youngest still loves to play Pokemon, and so do I!

In this class, I will set up a game, and I'll let the learners decide what moves each "player" will make. Then, we'll take turns solving the math... We'll compare numbers and add or subtract to determine what happens. Depending on time, we may even have a second game!

It would be helpful if learners know a little about playing the Pokemon card game. I can explain the rules a bit as we play, but the focus will be on solving math problems and playing the game. If someone has never played before, I will be offering choices of what they can do. I heavily emphasize kindness, and I tend to encourage students until they succeed. We'll all be playing as a team, so the atmosphere should be friendly and cooperative.

Other Details

Supply List
I will have everything needed for class, but many students may prefer writing out math problems to solve on paper, so I recommend having paper and a pencil or whatever they prefer to work problems on.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! My name is Tina Kaye Houston. I love helping people learn new things! Locally, I've taught art classes that are based on studying the masterpieces by a variety of artists. I have tutored many students in math over the years, and I especially love Algebra and Trigonometry. I've also taught music and movement classes, and I've coordinated and administered standardized testing. I previously taught English to Chinese students online for nearly three years, and we are in our 22nd year as a homeschool family. Two of our children have graduated, and we still have a few years with our youngest child. I'm a scout leader, and I sing in a band. I spent most of my childhood reading books and learning crafts, so I'm good at making things and I love to read. I am a grammar nerd, too, and I love helping students to use good grammar without feeling overwhelmed by rules. What I'm the most passionate about, though, encouraging others to do their best. I have so many ideas, and I really look forward to meeting the needs of a variety of students and their families! I can't wait to meet you and explore new things together!

PLEASE NOTE: In addition to teaching my own classes here, I teach classes with "Just Help Me Learn LLC" here on Outschool. You can find Daily Grammar and other classes that I teach at https://outschool.com/teachers/Phyllis-Bixler Just look for which teacher is listed for each class time.

Class Policies:

1) If a class is small or has especially talkative students, we may end a little earlier or later, but I will always try to end on time.

2) If a scheduled class does not meet the minimum enrollment, I will contact the parent approximately 24 hours before class time to offer to transfer their learner to a new day and time. If requested, I may choose to teach the class at the original time.

3) Classes will begin on time, even if all learners are not yet present in the classroom. To respect the time of the learners in the class, I will contact absent learners after class to see if they had technical issues or other challenges.

4) If no learners are present in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes into the scheduled time before exiting the classroom.

5) If I am late because of having technical challenges myself, I will offer to stay late or transfer learners to a new session.

6) I expect that learners will treat each other kindly in class and show respect for everyone present. I treat others the way I want to be treated, and I expect the same in return.
