Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
In this one-time, one-on-one class, students will learn and practice foundational place value skills that enable them to gain proficiency and confidence with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of larger numbers. We will focus on skills such as knowing the names of the various place value positions, the values of the digits in those positions, the relationships that exist between the place value positions, and expanded form. Because this is a one-on-one class, I can customize the instruction to address specific goals or needs a student might have. For example, if a child is working on 1-digit by 2-digit multiplication, we can spend our time on the place value skills and concepts that support this goal. Students can take this class more than once, and each time we can deepen our understanding of certain skills and operations or shift to a different focus. As we practice these skills, I will share useful strategies and tips, encourage a positive view of math, and help students develop the greatest gift any young mathematician can possess—strong number sense.

I am a National Board Certified elementary school teacher, and I have taught math every year of my 28-year career. I have been thoroughly trained in the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach to mathematics. It's very important to me that my students make sense of their mathematics, develop strong conceptual understanding, build a solid foundation of skills, enjoy their math, gain confidence, and find the subject interesting, engaging, and meaningful.
