Assignments
1-2 hours per week. Feedback is given Monday for any work completed the previous week, excluding weekends.
Letter Grade
Given upon request as percentage. Essay feedback will include a point score if requested.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate Level
This class focuses on helping students understand the techniques of persuasion in writing.  Activities will focus on the elements of persuasion, including backing, qualifiers, concessions, and call to action.  Rhetorical strategies of ethos, logos, and pathos will also be covered.  Students will complete light research and write a persuasive essay, then learn how to turn that piece into an actionable letter that they can then mail once they complete the class.

With a focus on organization and rich development, attention will be given to all parts of an essay, including building a compelling introduction.  We will walk through the writing process from brainstorming to outlining to writing, with a focus on strong thesis statements and an engaged writing voice. 

The class is self-paced with multiple short assignments per week.  The teacher provides at least one video, written lesson material, and interactive assignments.  

Plus the instructor gives personalized weekly feedback on every activity. Essay feedback is detailed with an overview of how the student did on their organization, development, thesis statement, use of voice, and grammar--this is one-on-one instruction.

At Write from the Heart, your voice comes first.  We are all better writers when we have something to say.  We teach how structure, organization, and grammar help us effectively communicate who we are and what we believe through the written word.  It’s not about learning the rules.  It’s about discovering how we can use the tools of writing to most clearly express ourselves.

Introduction to Our Class

Parts of Persuasion
 Learn all about the five parts of persuasion and how to include them in your writing.

 We will find a topic for your assignment and formulate possible claim statements.

 Learn the ethics of persuasion.

Pre-Requisites
Students should be familiar with the basics of essay writing, writing a thesis statement, and supporting that thesis.

At Write from the Heart, our goal is to help students find their voices and grow in writing and critical thinking skills. Above all, we believe that education is a personal journey of discovery. It is shaped by the personality of the child, the beliefs and values of the child’s family, and the experiences that the child encounters. It should never be undervalued. We desire to come alongside parents in helping each child through that personal journey.

Veldorah Rice, who is the director of Write from the Heart, as a BA in English, History, and Communication and a MA in English and Film Studies.  She oversees the classes and enjoys creating new curriculum and tools for student writers. She has worked at both the high school and collegiate level. Additionally, Veldorah enjoys speaking at homeschool and teacher conferences about writing and helping students find their voices. In her free time, she loves knitting, watching bad movies with her husband and three children, and blogging for the Write from the Heart community.

Veldorah has been a teacher for over 25 years, focusing on cultivating critical thinking skills within the act of writing.  She has worked at both the high school and collegiate level.
