Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
In this one-time, one-on-one class, students will have the opportunity to learn how to write various types of paragraphs that they will likely encounter in grades 3-5. Before class I will ask parents to let me know which type of paragraph they would like me to focus on with their child and provide me with any information they wish to share about their child’s previous writing experiences or current goals. That will enable me to arrive at our session well prepared.
Students may choose from the following options.

1) “Basic” paragraph structure that features a clear topic sentence, contains supporting details and transition words, and ends with a concluding sentence that restates the main idea found in the topic sentence.
2) A “funnel-shaped” introductory paragraph typically found at the beginning of 5-paragraph personal, persuasive, and literary essays.
3) A “body” paragraph (usually found three times in 5-paragraph essays) that includes a reason that supports the thesis statement, examples, elaboration on those examples, transition words, and a concluding sentence.
4) An “upside down funnel-shaped” concluding paragraph typically found at the end of 5-paragraph personal, persuasive, and literary essays.
5) A descriptive paragraph that focuses on a specific topic and includes well-chosen sensory details.

The 1-on-1 approach allows me to customize the class so that students can focus on the topics most relevant to them and work at their preferred pace. I can also address specific goals or needs a student might have. In addition, students can take this class more than once, and each time they can deepen their understanding of certain skills and concepts, gain additional practice, or shift to a different focus. As we practice skills and strategies, I will encourage a positive view of writing and do everything I can to help children discover the joy that writing can offer us.
After each session, I will send a parent email reviewing the material we addressed and suggesting potential next steps should parents wish to enroll their child in one or more follow-up sessions.
