Paint to Music the Club: Interpreting Classical Music for Fun
Class experience
This class is meant for students who like to be creative. It is meant as a creative outlet to show students a certain way to get inspiration for their art: by painting what they imagine when they listen to music. Not all students at this age will be ready or willing to do this activity, but many are and really enjoy using their imagination in this way. Each week I will choose two classical songs. Most students like to paint two different paintings, one to each song. Others prefer to just...
The goals for this glass are: 1. For students to learn the beauty of Classical music. 2. For students to practice connecting what they hear in music to their imagination.
Paint to music was a favorite competition that our local orchestra held on a monthly basis. While it has the same concept, this club is just for fun. I have been playing the piano since I was 5 years old and I enjoy many kinds of music. I also love to sing. Music is very important to me and I have been classically trained. Regardless of one's favorite genre, Classical is a long lasting genre that has developed over time and really helps children understand music. I want to pass on some of this appreciation of music to younger generations.
Each week each student will need two pieces of paper. It can be printer paper or art paper, but white or off-white is preferred. Students will need paint brushes, paint, water, and a cloth or paper towel (to dry their paint brush). If a student does not have paints or isn't good with paints, I have no objection to colored pencils, crayons, or markers. If the parent is daring, finger paints would also be fine. It is up to the parent to decide their choice of art supplies for their child.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This is meant to be a positive experience, however sadness and anger can be expressed through music. I may redirect the class if a very sensitive topic arises. If any emotions come up that seem concerning to me, I will certainly treat the student with respect and alert the parents of any concerns I have.
As a teacher and private tutor, I enjoy sharing my knowledge and interest in a variety of science courses with my students as well as extra curricular activities where I can introduce my interests with my students. In a short time teaching...
