Class Experience

This class is part of the Outschool Learning Paths program and is intended to be a part of a set of classes that work together to build academic mastery. This is class, [Part 3 of 3] in the Learning Path and at the end of the class, your learner will be assessed for their level of mastery on the skills and standards covered in this class. To learn more about Outschool Learning Paths, please visit info.outschool.com/outschool-paths.

This class is Part 3 of 3 in the Addition and Subtraction Strategies Learning Path. At the end of this class, your learner will be assessed for their level of mastery on the skills and standards covered in this class.

Wondering if your learner is ready for Part 3? Your learner should be familiar with the following:
- Identifies numbers 1-1000.
- Fluently adds and subtracts within 20.
- Solves addition and subtraction story problems with accuracy for number sets within 20.
- Firm number sense for 1-20, developing number sense within 100.
- Place value: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands.
*If you have questions about placement, please message me and we can discuss your learner's skills and needs.

Standards and Objectives covered in Part 2:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.5
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1
Solve addition and subtraction problems within 100 to solve one and two step word problems using a variety of strategies to solve for unknowns.

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.9
Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.
Understand and apply a variety of addition and subtraction strategies with precision.

This class meets twice a week for 3 weeks. Each lesson includes the following format:
Welcome & Warm Up: Greet classmates and review previous concepts taught with a warm up activity.
Lesson: Mini lesson followed by in-class practice to build skills and understanding.
Closing & Wrap Up: Students will complete a check for understanding activity before the end of class.

Lessons in Part 3 will focus on expanding on strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems within 100 and how to apply these strategies when solving story (word) problems. In particular, Part 3 has a dual focus on word problem language as well as order of steps to solve. Additionally, learners will practice showing their mathematical thinking and describe their use of strategies with correct math language. In Part 3, learners will both solve and create story problems of their own. Each lesson will use a variety of learning methods to engage students, including lesson activities using Nearpod (interactive lesson platform), presentation slides and group games.

This course is designed to promote math discussion, creative thinking and confidence with math skills. Learners are encouraged to share their math thinking and practice during each lesson.

At the end of Part 3, learners will complete an assessment on the strategies and story problem skills mastered throughout the 3 weeks. The teacher will provide written feedback to guardians with detailed information on their learner's progress and performance in the course.

Hi!

My name is Jenna McCasland and I am so excited to teach your child in my virtual classroom! I live in Madison, Wisconsin with my husband and our two children, ages 3 and 1 year. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and I am certified to teach grades PreK - 6.

I've been teaching in the classroom for 8 years in a variety of settings including the Madison public school district, a project-based preschool, and with an online ESL company. It is because of this varied experience (hands-on in the classroom and as a successful online educator) that I am uniquely qualified to teach your child. Here's a closer look at my experience:
- 3 years as a Kindergarten classroom teacher. (2013-2015, 2017-2018)
- 2 years as a Third Grade classroom teacher. (2015-2017)
- 1 year as a 4-year-old Kindergarten classroom teacher. (2019-2020)
- 3 years teaching ESL online, 5-star rating,1512 classes, 423 students. (2018-2021)

In addition, I have participated as a member of my school's leadership team, partnered with the National Equity Project and Universal Design for Learning. I also worked as a project assistant for a state-wide children's book club, in partnership with the Cooperative Children's Book Center, to select high-quality children's literature and provide opportunities for students to meet authors.

I am an energetic, encouraging and patient educator. It is important to me that my students feel welcomed, appreciated and celebrated in my classroom. I believe all children are capable and as a teacher, I strive to guide and support children to be the best learners they can be.

In my classes, I plan to engage children in exciting hands-on learning activities, interactive games/songs and connect with a variety of children's literature. I use a blend of traditional classroom techniques, paired with engaging online teaching strategies to create a fun and supportive learning environment. It is my hope that students are able to develop a sense of community in my class, even if we have just a short time together!

My class offerings will include Preschool and Kindergarten circle times, early mathematical concepts, beginning reader strategies, rhyming and syllables, alphabet and phonics work, as well as early writing skills.

I look forward to meeting your learner in my classroom!

- Mrs. M
