In this one-time class, students will learn strategies to help them begin to mentally add quickly. We will begin by learning the complements for the number 10. Next, we will practice identifying the complements through question and answer. We will discuss traditional ways to add and how finding complements makes solving addition problems much easier and faster. Using our new strategy, we will practice solving some addition problems by mentally adding 3 or more numbers. Students will then learn a strategy to quickly find the complements for the number 100. Together we will practice finding complements for 100. We will also use this strategy to practice mentally subtracting from 100 without borrowing or subtracting. Students will also learn the strategy of using the Compensation Property to make it easier to solve addition problems in their head. This class offers beneficial tips that will hopefully help students improve their math skills. After learning these strategies and practicing them at home to master them, students will be amazed at how quickly they can begin to solve equations in their head. Students should be able to do basic addition and subtraction.
Learning Goals
The learning goals for this class are to help students learn mental math strategies that will not only give them some new skills to help them solve equations, but my hope is that students will enjoy learning to solve equations mentally and quickly. This skill will also hopefully encourage students to begin to identify the patterns in math and grow in their math skills. Learning to solve equations mentally is not only a helpful skill, but it can also be a lot of fun to do once you get the hang of it.

Hello!
My name is Ms. Bridget. I teach classes focusing on mental math strategies for addition and review, tips and mental math strategies for multiplication. Currently, I have two one-time classes available teaching mental math strategies for addition. The multiplication classes will be available soon. My hope is that these will be fun classes that will help students with their math skills and leave them impressed at their ability to solve equations quickly and mentally. These classes are for children ages 6-12.
I have a bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in accounting. I enjoy math and working with numbers. I have several years experience teaching children. I have been homeschooling my own children for the past eight years. I teach English as a Second Language to online learners and I also teach Sunday School to children in our church for ages 4-13. I love teaching and helping children learn and grow in all areas of life. I think learning should be a positive experience. I believe that all children have gifts and talents unique to them. I am passionate about helping children to discover what they are good at and helping them to grow in areas of weakness. I love seeing the confidence children gain as they realize what they know and how capable they are.
