Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
In this ongoing class students will turn into problem solvers who have one mission: to solve the math word problem.
But, before they can solve the math problem they need to unlock it by learning new information about the topic for the week.
This is an introduction to solving math word problems with numbers 1-20.

Please note: this class will be the same topics and math problems as the classes taught from March-May 2021. New classes topics and math problems will be taught in November 2023.

In this class science, reading, math, and writing are integrated so that all learners feel successful and confident at some point in class.

⭐️In my classes connection is really important. In this class there will be a maximum of 5 students. I think students learn more when they get to know the teacher, other friends, and are able to feel known in class. I enjoy getting to know each student and encouraging learners to share things with each other. I believe this is part of making learning fun. ⭐️

The classes do not build upon each other so you are welcome to join any week. I provide 3 optional worksheets for each week. This enables learners at different stages of learning to be a part of the same class.
⭐️The first worksheet is for students who can form sentences independently.
⭐️The 2nd worksheet provides a sentence that can be traced for younger students.
⭐️The 3rd worksheet provides 2 sentences that can be traced for younger students.

**If you participated in a one-time math class I make sure to make the classes one-time and ongoing classes different so that students don't see the same lesson.

In this class students will work on reading, writing, and math skills while working on math problems.

Learners do not need the ability to read the problem to be able to solve it. Some students struggle with reading while flourishing in math. Giving these students math word problems usually gives them a sense of confidence in the midst of learning reading and comprehension skills. It's a great way to reinforce both reading and math skills

Students will learn how to solve math word problems. This will be a student centered class where learners are encouraged to problem solve and fix errors amongst each other.
⚫️Learners will be given a math problem which the teacher will read out loud. Then learners are given 5 minutes (depending on the needs of each individual class) to solve this problem. They are encouraged to use tangible ways of coming up with a solution but they are not required to use 1 specific way of answering. If they figure out their answer before the rest of the class they will be encouraged to test their solution by finding a solution to the problem in a different way.
⚫️During this time the teacher will not correct errors. This is a student centered class. Therefore, errors will be discussed as a class.
⚫️Once students find solutions to the problem they will be encouraged to write their answer in sentence form. This helps students prepare to share their answers out loud. Then students will share their answers out loud. This encourages communication skills in young learners. The teacher will write each answer on the board. If there are different answers then as a class we try to figure out which answer is correct.
⚫️Once we have the correct answer the teacher will introduce/review different ways of interacting with the numbers within our problem.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to comprehend math word problems.
Students will learn different ways to solve word problems.

Students will communicate how they found their answers.
Students will write their answer in sentence form.

Parental Guidance
It's important that you let your child solve the problem themselves. They might struggle with this at first, some students might even cry with frustration. But, if they stick with it and figure out the solution they learn how to work through difficulty. It is an empowering thing when they discover this.
Supply List
-Pencil
