-Pencil -Paper -Crayons -Anything that can be used for your child to count: blocks, counters, cheerios, cars, unicorns. Anything that will engage your child in solving math problems. It's important that you let your child solve the problem themselves. They might struggle with this at first, some students might even cry with frustration. But, if they stick with it and figure out the solution they learn how to work through difficulty. It is an empowering thing when they discover this.
This is based on the concept of "Cognitively Guided Instruction" for math instruction.
