Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
During this summer class, students will learn all about cryptography (the art of writing or solving codes). They will learn about the history of secret codes and ciphers. They will learn about the most important figures throughout history in the development of creating and deciphering secret messages. I also offer a part one of this camp - they do not need to be taken in order!

Students will also learn about different types of ciphers and codes throughout the class. They will have a chance to solve these ciphers and write their own.

I will use a combination of lecture using Canva slides, engaging pictures, and sometimes video to teach the material. Students will also need a paper and pencil handy because they will be solving and/or writing their own ciphers and codes in every class.

During some classes, students may do an interactive project like invisible ink or making their own St. Cyr Slide.

Day 1: Pig Pen and Rosicrucian Cipher, ciphers and the Revolutionary War, Jefferson's Cipher Wheel
Day 2: Make Our Own Cipher Disk,
Day 3 : Date shift cipher, rail fence cipher
Day 4: Escape Room using these ciphers and a few new ones

You may also be interested in my other summer camps including a part one of this camp (you do not need to take the camps in order). I also offer a spy school camp all about espionage!

Hi! My name is Lydia. I am a teacher and a librarian. I love learning, and I think learning should be fun. I like to laugh, sing, and play with little kids, and I love exploring strange and exciting topics with older learners.

Throughout the course of my career, I have worked with kids of all ages - from children as young as three all the way up to high school seniors.I have worked as a classroom teacher, preschool teacher, school librarian, nanny, camp counselor, and volleyball coach. I have more than ten years experience working with kids. I have a Bachelor's degree in English. I also have a Master's degree in Library and Informational Sciences specializing in school library media. When I completed my Master's program, I receiving a teaching certificate in the state of Virginia.

Before my career in education, I worked as a newspaper reporter. I still love reading a daily newspaper, and I am very passionate about current events.

I also love to cook and bake, and I'm really good at it. I even have my own wheat grinder and make my own bread. It's not all healthy, though. I can make some of the best tasting ice cream in the world! Check out some of my cooking classes, and I'll teach you all you need to know!

Please come join me in one of my classes! I'd love to see you soon!
