Class Experience

In this class, learners will follow step-by-step directions to create and personalize self-portraits in a style inspired by Andy Warhol's pop art!

Learners can come prepared with a JPEG file of a photograph of themself (or a photo of a friend, family member, or a favorite fictional character if they don't want to use their own picture). Then we will run their photo through a free online filter that will create a black and white stencil version of the image. They will then print out four to six identical copies of the image (on standard printer paper).

Next, each student will use any combination of paints, markers, crayons, and/or colored pencils to color the white spaces on their images. Students will use different colors and decorations for each copy of their picture. Finally, they will then cut around the pictures and glue them onto a new sheet of paper to make a colorful, personalized self-portrait collage! At the end of class, students can share their projects with their classmates.

For this class, learners will need a computer that is hooked up to a printer, a pair of scissors, paper, and a glue stick (or liquid glue). They will also need some combination of paints, brushes, crayons, colored pencils and/or markers depending on their preferred art supplies.
