Notan is a Japanese word that references light and dark. Students will create a stunning mixed-media collage using black construction paper on a watercolored background.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Intermediate Level
2 lessons//2 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Notan; Learn Wet-On-Wet Painting Technique
We will begin by painting the background in wet-on-wet watercolor technique, and set it aside to dry while discussing shapes to practice drawing. We will practice drawing those designs on "practice paper" and then cut out the shapes. These can be saved to trace onto black paper next week if desired. Once the painting is dry, it is a good idea to press it flat under a stack of books, if possible, to make it easier to work with next week.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Create the Collage
We will review the processes from last week, and trace or draw designs on black construction paper.. We will cut out the designs, being careful not to lose any of the pieces, glue down the center, and then fit, flip and glue the pieces.
I am a licensed art teacher. I love to bring art history alive by connecting my students with the amazing work of contemporary artists that they can identify with. Please check out my entire series! I will continue to add more artists as I am able!
Pencils, eraser, sharpener
paper for practice (printer paper works!)
good quality paper, 9X12 or 11X14 (Canson Watercolor or Bristol Board are encouraged, and can be found at Walmart or Michaels)
black paper (open stock paper at Michael's, or get a stack of multi-color construction paper and use it in my other classes!)
watercolor paint: I recommend Crayola or Prang
bowl of water
brushes (watercolor, size 8, 9, or 10 work really well for this if possible)
scissors
Elmer's glue (white or clear; NOT gluesticks, please!)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Scissors will be used in this class.
