Let's Play Core Keeper! a Video Gaming Social Club (8-13, Ongoing)
What's included
1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Welcome to the first Core Keeper cavern on Outschool! If you like Terraria, Starbound, Stardew Valley, and Minecraft, you're going to love Core Keeper! Learners will: * Play together (up to 7!) in a teacher-hosted cooperative world * Choose their own specialty and role * Custom create their own character using stats, perks, and appearances * Strategize to achieve game goals * Share progress, tips, tricks and questions with others * Use teamwork - often in separate but complementary roles * Work cooperatively for the greater good The bulk of class will be learners playing the game together, but may also include learner-led conversations on all aspects of the game: exploration, gardening, mining, foraging, crafting, building, combat, and boss fights. Since this class is about meeting together to play cooperatively, learners will need to use teamwork to accomplish common goals and purposes. Learners are asked to give at least as much as they take. Learners who use up excessive resources, destroy or remove items, unleash enemies in inappropriate places, and otherwise intentionally work against the common good or goals (i.e. "griefing") may be removed from the session or the class after verbal warning. ** Please note that this class may contain spoilers as learners will be in different stages of game play. ** Special thanks to the Core Keeper game developers at Pugstorm for generously granting permission for this class to happen!
Learning Goals
Students will extend their love of gaming into also practicing social skills, discussion, teamwork, and vicariously learning real-life takeaways through shared experiences in the Core Keeper video game.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Currently Core Keeper is only available on PC (through Steam), and learners DO need to have their own copy of the game. Core Keeper is an indie adventure pixel RPG still in early access along the lines of Terraria or Stardew Valley. Players adventure in a cavern to find materials, garden, explore, craft, and fight monsters.
Co-op codes will change every week and be provided upon the start of each class session so that learners can join the group game. The teacher will share a co-op code, which should minimize any personal information shared by learners (such as gamer handles). However, please talk to your learner about cyber security and what should or should not be shared during class (i.e. what names they choose for their characters). This class may use breakout rooms to allow learners to co-op play with others or chat about certain games in smaller groups. In the event breakout rooms are used, the teacher will alternate among rooms to moderate and keep on track, as well as being in game with learners.

Teacher expertise and credentials
A long-time gamer, I have over 600 hours of experience in this game, although it's only been available via early access since March, 2022. I've beaten every major and minor boss and am ready for the 1.0 release in August of 2024! I look forward to learning and advising as much as I can while guiding learners through co-op play as the game continues to be developed and change.
