In this fun, one-time drawing class, we'll design and draw some cute animals together! We'll learn about various details in this cute style of drawing -- large eyes with a highlight in the pupil, small mouths, added details like rosy cheeks, eyelashes, freckles, and other details -- and learners will be encouraged to use their imagination while creating various cute drawings of animals of their choice. We'll brainstorm about favorite animals and I will also include ideas for subjects if learners aren't sure where to start or what kind of animal they would like to draw. This class encourages learners to use their imaginations in drawing different kinds of cute animals, rather than guiding the learners step-by-step together through drawing the same kind of animal (there are already lots of other really good kawaii drawing classes on Outschool that do this, so this class is designed to be different from those!). The class begins with me demonstrating different ways of drawing eyes, smiles, rosy cheeks and other "cute" details, and then learners are encouraged to follow their imaginations in what kind of animal or animals they want to draw and how to make it cute -- some will want to add eyelashes, mustaches, or hats, others might get inspired to draw along a theme (pink cats, for example, or glitter axolotls, etc.). There will be time for drawing together and questions; learners are encouraged to share their drawings and get inspired by the ideas of other learners during the class. My classes are fun and interactive -- I believe there is no wrong way to approach art and I encourage learners to be creative and have fun with the class. My teaching style has been described as interactive and supportive; I teach using drawings and other objects that I hold up to the camera rather than using slides. I encourage learners to participate however they are most comfortable; they are encouraged but not required to share their ideas and drawings, and I also encourage peer-to-peer socialization and chatting while drawing especially in classes like these. Students will be encouraged to experiment rather than work toward completion of a single specific project; i.e. students will get to choose their own subject matter and try out different techniques. I will demonstrate penciling, inking, and coloring, but learners should draw however they like most (some like to use pencil first, others start with marker -- both are OK for this class!) This class is designed to be a fun and low-pressure way to draw together. Learners who draw on tablets are also welcome!
Learning Goals
Students will learn details that help "cute-ify" their creations: large eyes with a highlight, small mouths, rosy cheeks, eyelashes, freckles, and other details. We'll talk about penciling, inking, and coloring, along with a basic discussion of color theory (why some colors look good together or more bright when used together). Students will also, hopefully, have fun drawing together!

Learners can use whatever drawing supplies they have at hand for this class. Any kind of paper will work, and though I'll use pencils, markers, and colored pencils in this class, students can use whatever they like. If your learner prefers to draw on a tablet, that's also totally OK and will work for this class.

Hello! My name is Anne (she/her) and I am an artist and educator based in New England, USA. I've worked as an educator in a variety of settings ranging from afterschool arts programming to hands-on science programming to speaking and presentation skills with non-native speakers of English. My academic background is in English literature and popular culture, but I have a wide range of teaching interests.
As a non-traditional learner myself, I believe that people learn in many different ways, so it is vital to meet students where they're at. Education should be interesting and engaging.
I am available for a variety of arts-based classes (including developing new classes) as well as private tutorials; please feel free to message if either of those are of interest to you or your learner. I do tend to hold classes even with lower enrollment numbers, and am happy to schedule additional sections depending on scheduling and needs. My goal is to have the classroom be an inclusive, supportive environment that encourages creativity and creative thinking.
A fun fact about me: I've been a roller derby referee for over ten years!
I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
