Lego Science - Build the Earth!
Class experience
Calling all LEGO and science fans! Grab some LEGOs from your collection and build accurate layers of the Earth with us! Scientists make models and diagrams to learn more about a subject, and we will be doing that with our bricks. We'll begin with a look at Earth's layers in diagrams and pictures, as well as indirect evidence like volcanic eruptions, earthquake waves, and iron meteorites. Students will have a chance to share what they know and ask questions, as well as view pictures,...
Students will create a diagram showing the Earth's inner and outer core, mantle, and crust. Students will explain how scientists can learn about the inside of the Earth through studying earthquake data, volcanoes, and meteorites. Students will compare the relative size of the Earth's crust to its other layers.
I teach geology at the American Museum of Natural History and enjoy finding hands on ways for students to explore this fascinating area of science. I also have a LEGO-obsessed child and have seen firsthand how building with LEGOs is a fantastic learning opportunity!
Recommended LEGO pieces: -baseplate - Can use any size. A bigger baseplate will support a larger model. -LEGO bricks (2x2, 2x4, 1x2, or any other sizes available) in the following colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue -LEGO flat pieces ("flats") in blue, green, and white Optional: coloring supplies in the project colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue) and blank paper for students to plan out their designs.
