Beginner Level
This class is a live group designed to teach everything needed to be able to play the recorder within 9 weeks. The content of lesson follows the recorder karate progression, with new notes and progressively harder songs to master in each lesson. This makes this set of classes perfect for anyone wanting to learn how to play the recorder, even if they haven't played before! Week 1Lesson 1Recorder basics!In this lesson, you will learn how to hold your recorder, how to make a good sound, the first notes B, A and G, and begin to learn how to read music using our first song.Week 2Lesson 2Keeping timeThis lesson focuses on recapping how to read and play the notes B A G, as well as further work on how to read rhythms.Week 3Lesson 3ArticulationThis lesson puts together everything learned so far, as well as adding in articulation and how to tongue notes.Week 4Lesson 4The note EThis lesson introduces the note low E, where it sits on the stave, and how to play it. The lesson also introduces quaver notes and how to play them.Week 5Lesson 5The note DThis lesson introduces the note low D, where it sits on the stave, and how to play it. The lesson also introduces crotchet rests and dotted minims.Week 6Lesson 6Tying together C and D!This lesson introduces high D and C, where they sit, and how to play them. The lesson also introduces tied notes.Week 7Lesson 7Staying sharp!This lesson introduces the note F#, where it sits, and how to play it, as well as the idea of a key signature.Week 8Lesson 8Altogether now!This lesson ties up everything learned so far in preparation for the final piece.Week 9Lesson 9Your time to shine!Performance time! In this lesson, students will have a chance to perform any piece they choose from the selection practiced in previous lessons.
Students will begin their learning and understanding of how to play the recorder with good sound and technique, as well as the basics of being able to independently read music and play songs on their instrument.
My experience in this area includes many years of both one to one and classroom recorder lessons in person, privately, in school internationally and in the UK, and online. Teaching students for their love of the instrument and for taking ABRSM exams My qualifications include ABRSM theory and practical qualifications, BA hons in music and popular music, and PGCE in secondary music.
Homework Offered
The music sheets used in class will be available for viewing for practice outside of the lesson. It is recommended students practice as much as possible outside of the classroom. Lessons 1 - 7 - homework includes practice of the piece covered in that weeks lesson. Lesson 8 - Practice any piece of choosing for the following performance/concert lesson. Final lesson - Practice Ode to Joy for assessment.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
