Class Experience

Help Captain Peter fix his flight computer so he can launch a rocket to the moon!

Students will be taught intro to computer programming. We will cover basic programming environments (IDEs), and become familiar with a popular online starting IDE called Repl.it. After that, we will go through everything around how to write your first program in Python, a common scripting language - this first lesson will cover variables, operators, and basic functions.

This is a hands on class meant for students who have gone through toy programming languages and are interested in pursuing computer science in a more serious / real world environment - if your student has played around with Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/), then this is the ideal next step towards truly building their passion for computer science. This course may be a bit challenging for students who have no concept of programming, but I welcome ambition, and will do my best to guide them. We will be going through numerous exercises, and I will be coding live over Zoom and guiding students as they build their own programs alongside me.

I encourage you to read my bio - I have extensive experience teaching younger students computer science in a way that is fun and engaging and not just reading from a textbook. I believe that the best way to learn is by doing and am thus an extremely hands-on teacher.

Let's get your cadets to the moon and back!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm Peter. I'm a recent Yale graduate with a Master's and Bachelor's in Computer Science, and have been teaching students for the last 5 years, from running a small tutoring gig in high school to organizing learnathons for the local community at Yale.

I'm going to teach computer science the way I wish I learned it: personalized, entertaining, and incredibly hands-on. Fundamentally, I believe that the best way to learn is to have fun doing it, and education should be something to look forward to, not seen as a chore.

I'm also a hobbyist runner and chef! Would love to do some classes on those later on when I build more expertise.
