Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
This class gives an introduction to Python with emphasis on practice and solving real programming problems.
Python is a great programming language for teens and tweens to learn.

In this class, we will start with language syntax, variables, reserved words, operations on various data types. We will then teach if conditions, for and while loops to do basic algorithms.

We will work on real programming problems such as finding the maximum in an array, merging arrays, building nested loop structures, error checks, etc.

Topics covered:

Python data types and operations: numbers and booleans:
Python Strings and operations
Methods, arguments and return types
More methods, arguments and return types
Loops: for and while loops
Arrays: traversing a single array to find sum, max, occurrences, etc
Arrays: Traversing two arrays using for loops
Nested loops: using nesting to build visual structures
Using tuples and sets
Using Python dictionaries
Discuss various programs and pick a few to solve together
Revise and quiz and look at more problems

In each class we will start with learning something new and then learners will be asked to do a small exercise to make the concept really sink in.

Learners will use an online programming site called onecompiler.com to type and test their code. This helps us focus on the class material and not the IDE. If learners already have an IDE installed and can get help using it, they may use that instead too. IDE is totally optional. The class will only use onecompiler.com throughout.

We will learn concepts using a mix of code as well as slides. Both will be available to learners during the class.

If learners miss a class. they should watch the recording and do the examples taught before their next class.
--------------------------------------
Homework:
A short homework will be assigned after most classes.
It should take between 10-20 minutes.
Homework is optional but highly encouraged since it helps with retention.
--------------------------------------
Prerequisites:
* Learners must know how to type and how to copy-paste text.
* They must know how to share their screen.

--------------------------------------
Help the class be successful by spreading the word to friends.

If you prefer a 1:1 class instead, please let me know and I can send you a private section if I have availability.
1:1s cost higher - around a dollar a minute (cost as of March 2025).
