Students will learn about the Sleepy Lagoon Murder Trial and the Zoot Suit Riots, a series of conflicts in Los Angeles, California during World War II. This is a great topic for Hispanic / Latinx Heritage Month and Mexican-American studies.
Class experience
Students will learn about the Los Angeles Zoot Suit Riots, a series of conflicts that occurred in June 1943 between United States servicemen and Mexican American youths, the latter of whom wore outfits called zoot suits. Some Spanish words will be mentioned throughout this class with a translation provided. Mrs. Sara is a Mexican-American Latina who is passionate about teaching students Latina/o/x history. She holds a Master's Degree in Education and has relatives who live in the Los Angeles area that have a personal connection to the Zoot Suit Riots.
