Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
This is the 4-week (once per week) version of this class. There is also a CAMP (4 days in a row) version here: https://outschool.com/classes/camp-for-junior-paleontologists-creeping-climbing-swimming-flying-pIEK2H3i#us7ZOYiLMn

In this course, students will learn through a variety of approaches, such as read aloud stories, informative slides and graphics, drawing, building and sculpting, movement activities, video clips, games, discussion, repetition and more. Students will investigate a variety of dinosaurs and their corresponding prehistoric periods. Math and science are interwoven into lessons. Vocabulary words such as paleontologist, herbivore, carnivore, timeline, extinction, bi-pedal, quadrupedal, theropod, sauropod, therapsids, cynodonts, insects, mammals, reptiles, Permian, Mesozoic, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and more will be introduced and used during these interactive, engaging lessons.

This course is a great follow-up to my super popular multi-day class, and camp, "Discovering Dinosaurs"--BUT, you do not have to to take them in any particular order, and each course stands on it's own.

This is an introductory STEAM course, specially created for PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade students. The subject matter will be adapted to suit their educational and developmental level.

The general weekly course topics will be:
Week 1 --Intro to the Mesozoic Era on a timeline, "Creeping" Creatures of the Mesozoic Era
Week 2 -- "Climbing" Creatures of the Mesozoic Era
Week 3 -- "Swimming" Creatures of the Mesozoic Era
Week 4 -- "Flying" Creatures of the Mesozoic Era

Each class will include several of the following elements: Lesson material presented in slides, a short video clip, a movement activity related to the weekly theme, a read-aloud from a related book, class discussion, 1-2 drawing/building/sculpting activities, and sharing. Some learning games may also be included. Students will also have the opportunity to share their optional extension projects/homework assignment (from the previous week) with their fellow students.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the prehistoric era of dinosaurs and the awesome creatures that shared their world. Students will learn about what paleontologists do, and practice building their skills of observation as they look at pictures of fossils and scientific illustrations of the fascinating animals and insects of the Mesozoic Era. Students will be able to identify and share what they know about these examples of prehistoric life, and will observe and recreate them in hands-on activities. Students will learn and use new vocabulary words related to the topic as well as interesting new facts, and engage in guided discussion about their some of their favorite dinosaurs and their Mesozoic neighbors.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class will discuss prehistoric creatures that could sometimes be brutal when hunting their food (the carnivores, anyway). All potentially sensitive content will be presented in a fun, lighthearted manner and will be completely age-appropriate. Regarding supplies/activities: Some projects may require cutting with scissors or other basic construction. Adult supervision or assistance may be required at the discretion of the parent, based on the individual student's capabilities and limitations. All STEM and creative projects will be age-appropriate in their nature and difficulty. Allergy Note: Playdough may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease. I am happy to provide a recipe for gluten-free playdough upon request, or suggest alternative supplies.
Supply List
Students should provide their own paper, pencil, coloring supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc), playdough or sculpting clay, building blocks such as construction-type, LEGO-style bricks, DUPLO-style bricks, or wooden blocks. Other creative building blocks are also OK to substitute. Dinosaur toys or models are helpful but not required.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm so excited to share my love of dinosaurs with you! I've been teaching STEAM topics like dinosaurs to preschool through middle school for 8 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be learning about dinosaurs, but we'll sneak in some colors, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!
