Class Experience

PLEASE NOTE: This class is NOT for beginners.
This class is geared towards children who:
* Can read all 46 hiragana
* Can independently have simple conversations in Japanese

Class will be conducted entirely in Japanese, and students are expected to follow instructions and to be able speak in simple sentences in Japanese. This is an extension of the "Circle Time for Preschool Age 3-6 Yrs (Immersion Class)", tailored to older, advanced learners.

Each Week, children will be led in song, story time, and activities in Japanese as they interact with Sensei and each other.
Throughout the year we will follow seasonal themes and Japanese holidays/traditions, and practice the same song(s) throughout each month to give a chance for students to remember the lyrics.

Each month we will work on a group reading assignment, and culminate in a read aloud 音読発表会 at the end of the month. The objective is to improve reading fluency (go from reading individual hiragana to sentences), and also practice writing hiragana. Katakana will also be introduced. The curriculum is designed to generally repeat every year, but students can join at any time during the year.

Teacher expertise and credentials
*** I am currently on a break from teaching. Thank you for your understanding. ***

こんにちは Konnichiwa! I am Ai Sensei. "Sensei" means "teacher" in Japanese.
I am a native Japanese speaker from Tokyo, Japan, and currently live in beautiful Hawaii with my husband and two children.

I was raised bilingual/bicultural and it is my passion to share my Japanese culture, not only with my own children but with all of my students. I truly believe that a multicultural education helps to develop empathetic, globally-minded children. I also believe that multilingualism or multiculturalism is one of the most valuable gifts a parent can give their child. It is sure to open up a world of new connections and opportunities, so I commend parents for encouraging your child's early interest in world cultures!

I currently work as an online teacher with children in Japan and China in addition to teaching on Outschool. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and have classroom experience in public elementary schools in Hawaii. You'll find my teaching style to be warm and enthusiastic and my classes tend to be smaller to allow for maximum interaction. I hope my students leave class feeling like they've made genuine connections with their teacher and classmates.

I teach a variety of classes on Japanese culture and language - cooking classes, conversation, games, folktales - but my goal remains the same: to make Japanese accessible and fun for learners of all levels. Whether you've recently discovered your interest in Japan, or you're already fluent, I look forward to seeing you soon in my classroom!

*** About Schedule Requests***
I currently have limited teaching availability on weekends and certain hours during the week. My teaching hours are at capacity; thus I am unlikely to be able to fulfill additional schedule requests. Apologies and thank you for your understanding.
