US Grade 3 - 6
The class will begin by covering the anatomy of the microscope, demonstrated on a working microscope. Safety and use will be taught. A worksheet to fill in the names of the parts will be provided. Next we will see how to make a simple slide, using a slide, pet hair, cover slip, and water or mineral oil. We will discuss how a microscope works, followed by observing slides on the microscope using a camera and phone-mount on the microscope so that the class can observe it live together. We will observe the slide we made, as well as several prepared slides. Class participation is greatly encouraged. We will review the parts after they are taught with a point-and-name method. The slides range from parts of a flower, mushroom, onion, insect body parts, and various tissues (ranging from human blood, dog esophagus, dog cardiac (heart) muscle, dog skeletal muscle, pig motor nerve, rabbit spinal cord or a few other options. If there is something on this list you do not want your child to observe, please let me know before the class so I can omit it, or notify when we will be looking at those slides).
