Intro to Graphic Memoir - Single Session
This course, recently taught at an acclaimed California university, will introduce your teen to the exciting literary format of the illustrated memoir: the perfect blend of emotional creative non-fiction and evocative artistic expression.
Class experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
In this single-session course, your teen will get to explore the exciting genre of graphic memoir. This intensive workshop meeting will involve a mix of discussion and lecture to gain the skills for graphic memoir understanding. High value is placed upon learner participation and thoughtful interpretation of ideas presented. However, the instructor understands and appreciates different approaches to participation, and will give every student the opportunity to participate at their level....
Learners will strive to gain baseline close reading skills and apply them to simple literary analysis of the graphic memoir genre. Furthermore, they will begin to grasp concepts on how both description and visual form are used to express an author’s internal concepts of representation and the larger applications to the genre. Students will be exposed to a basic understanding of comic art and close reading skills so that these understandings can be later applied to the texts they read outside of the course.
Dee Richards is a two-time award winning memoirist, with three anthology publications of short-form creative non-fiction. As a honors graduate of the University of California, Irvine's prestigious English department, Dee has a great wealth of knowledge in the various forms, movements, and genres of literature. While in school, Dee brought her original course concept exploring graphic memoirs to her fellow undergraduate students. Immediately following graduation, Dee taught workshops on memoir writing strategies through her local library circuit. Additionally, Dee is a current Master of Fine Arts candidate in the genre of Creative Non-Fiction. Dee owns over 50 graphic novels, and loves sharing her passion for graphic memoir with anyone who wants to learn!
