Class Experience

This will be a fun, hands-on, engaging intro to chemistry class for children from the ages of 7-10 years old. Children will be learning the basics of chemistry and then taking a hands-on approach and creating the experiments in their homes while learning the science behind it! The students will be able to make educated predictions (hypothesis) and observe what occurs in each experiment. Students will be able to discuss what they are seeing, smelling, and feeling. The students will be drawing, writing, or verbally discussing their predictions and observations throughout the process, it will be very interactive between teacher and learners. The students do not need any previous knowledge for this course. This course enhances critical thinking skills and social skills.

The structure of the class will start with an introduction and a vocabulary word(s) that relate to the experiment.
Ex. (Vocab word) - Hypothesis - means a scientific prediction of what they think will observe or what will take place

We will discuss the vocab word(s) in more depth then move on to the experiment of the day. After a description of the experiment that will be done, students will then predict what they think will occur and write or draw their prediction in their journals.

Experiment time:
1. Students gather their materials
2. We will do the experiment in steps altogether (measuring and mixing)
3. Watch the experiments come to life
4. Class discussion what they observed (visual, smells, touch)
5. Write/draw the outcomes in their scientific journals

Experiments to be done over the course (subject to change depending on students interests)
-Magic Milk (Science and Art approach)
-Gelatin Streaking
-Exploding Baggie
-Slime (Make 3 types of slime and compare)
-Exploding Playdough
-Chromatography & Diffusion
-Candy Acid Test
-Making Butter

Schedule:
Week 1: Acid and Base
Day 1: Exploding Playdough

Week 2: pH testing
Day 1: Candy pH test

Week 3: Acid/Base
Day 1: Exploding Baggies

Week 4: Polymers
Day 1: Slime (3 different types to compare)

Week 5: The Art of Chemistry
Day 1: Magic Milk

Week 6: The Art of Chemistry Continued
Day 1: Chromatography & Diffusion Art

Week 7: Colloids
Day 1: Making Butter

Week 8: Colloids
Day 1: Gelatin Streaking

Learning Goals

Students will be true scientists understanding the basic elements of chemistry, gaining knowledge with chemistry vocabulary, and having a fun, hands-on, engaging experience.
