Class Experience

Welcome to "Introduction to Drawing the Human Face for Beginners," an exciting 3-week online course that will teach you the essential skills and techniques needed to draw realistic human faces. This course is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to draw the human face, whether you are a beginner, or you have some experience and want to touch up on your skills.

In this course, we will start by covering the basic shapes and proportions of the human face. We will then delve into each facial feature, including the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, and explore how to capture their form and details. We will also learn how to use basic shading techniques to give your drawings depth and dimension.

Throughout the course, we will focus on common mistakes that beginners make when drawing the human face and how to avoid them. We will also cover how to turn the head in perspective, including the front view, profile, and 3/4 view.

The course will be structured as follows:
Week 1: we will learn to draw faces from the front. We will learn the basic shapes and proportions which comprise the head and face, and learn the forms and details of the features which sit on and around the face. Finally: we will add a few shadows and effects to enhance the depth of our drawing.
Week 2: we will proceed to draw the face from first a side perspective, and then a 3/4 perspective. We will cover the same details and forms as last time, but now from new, more exciting angles.
Week 3: This week will be dedicated to practice, and clarification. We will practice the skills we learned throughout the course of this class by studying and drawing faces from photographs. As we do so there will be an added emphasis on hair, and capturing the shape of gesture thereof. We will draw these faces from slight above and below angles, adding an extra challenge which will further expand student's ability to comfortable draw the face from any angle they might desire. This last week is also a great change for student's to ask questions about or for clarity on details or subjects they might be struggling with.

As you progress through the course, you will have the opportunity to show the teacher your work and receive personalized feedback on how to improve your skills. Each class will conclude with recommended practice exercises that will take no more than 30 minutes per week, allowing you to continue practicing and honing your skills between classes.

The course will be taught via screen sharing a digital art program, but students are free to use any materials they please. Whether you prefer traditional pencil and paper or digital tools, this course will provide you with the skills and techniques needed to draw the human face with confidence.

My classes feature a heavy focus on the fundamentals of drawing, crucial skills such as shape design, form, anatomy, perspective, shading, and more, which are essential to the development of solid drawing skills no matter the subject matter. My classes are often student led, taught within the context of media that the students enjoy.
