1 hour per week. Generally students only have homework if they didn't finish a lab, or if they need to do a quick (usually a page) reading for the next class.Assessment
As a teacher I am constantly assessing my students informally to make sure they are understanding the material. Upon the parent's request I can provide a written evaluation for completing the course.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 6
This hands-on, interactive science class gives students in GRADES 4-6 a foundation in the basics of chemistry. Through experiments, engaging books, and fascinating, interactive science videos, students discover what matter is made of and how it interacts. The class uses the R.E.A.L Science Odyssey curriculum as a base, and also incorporates other projects, activities, and experiments to deepen student understandings. Students in this class design experiments, do research projects, and learn to think like scientists. All while having fun! This class MAY be taken as a stand-alone class, but it is also designed to be part of a full-year 36-week science curriculum for grades 4-6. This class is PART 4 of 4. PART 1: Intro to Chemistry PART 2: The Periodic Table PART 3: Molecules & Matter PART 4 (this class): Reactions ****************************** STRUCTURE OF CLASS ****************************** Each class is 45 minutes in length and consists of a variety of activities, depending on the topic being studied. Learning activities in this class include, experiments, discussions, engaging videos, and projects. ***************** SPRING 2023 ***************** Below is a breakdown of topics covered each week in class. WEEK 1 (APR 10): Reactions LAB: Exploding Rainbows; Detecting Changes WEEK 2 (APR 17): Reactions -LAB: Is it Physical or Chemical?; Mixing Colors WEEK 3 (APR 24): Reactions -LAB: Let's Cool Things Down; Let's Heat Things Up WEEK 4 (MAY 1): Reactions -LAB: Mixtures & Solutions WEEK 5 (MAY 8): Reactions -LAB: Let's Make Water; Painting Magic WEEK 6 (MAY 15): Acidity -LAB: Make a pH Scale; Some Like it Sour WEEK 7 (MAY 22): Acidity -LAB: pHun with Acids; Bases All Around WEEK 8 (MAY 29): Acidity -LAB: Precipitates; Building Teeth WEEK 9 (JUN 5): Wrap-up -DEMO: Playing with Fire (Teacher will demonstrate this lab for safety) -FINAL LAB: Cooking Chemistry (Actual cooking is done OUTSIDE of class or during class with adult supervision.) ***************************** CLASS EXPECTATIONS ***************************** Students are expected to come to class prepared and to actively participate in class discussions, journaling, projects, and assignments. They will need a copy of the STUDENT PAGES, which will be their Science Journal for class. Due to copyright laws, I cannot provide copies to students. You must purchase it directly from REAL Science Odyssey. The link is included in the materials section. An eBook is $19, and a printed book is $28. This journal will be what your student will use through ALL FOUR PARTS OF THE SERIES, so you will only need to make one purchase for the entire year. Students are NOT required to do all of the experiments. If your student wishes to participate in the experiments, there are supplies you will need to purchase. Participation is always optional, but highly encouraged, as this is where a lot of learning takes place. I always demonstrate the experiments for any student who cannot or does not wish to participate. Therefore, ALL STUDENTS SHOULD COMPLETE THE JOURNALING, regardless of participation in experiments. ******************************* MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT ******************************* Students who enroll in all 4 parts of this class by Aug 1 will receive a 20% discount. Please message me for a discount code.
Learning Goals
After completion of this class, students will be able to:
-Explain the pH scale
-Differentiate between acids and bases
-Explain the difference between a physical and chemical reaction
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some of the supplies used in this class may need adult supervision, including, but not limited to:
-scissors
-potassium chloride
-borax
-rubbing alcohol
-hydrogen peroxide
In addition, some of the labs in this class require cooking. All cooking will be done either OUTSIDE of class (instructions and prep are done during class) or WITH ADULT SUPERVISION.
Supply List
Upon enrollment you will be given a fully detailed supply list. Most of the materials are items you might find around the house (coffee filter, rubber bands, etc.), but there will be some items you will need to purchase or borrow, including: -balloons -potassium chloride (salt substitute) -science thermometer -borax -hydrogen peroxide -popcorn -Alka-seltzer -yeast -red cabbage -rubbing alcohol All students will need a copy of the REAL Science Odyssey Student Pages, available here for $19 (ebook) or $$28 (print book):https://www.pandiapress.com/product/real-science-odyssey-chemistry-level-one-student-pages/ Students who have been in a previous class from this series WILL NOT need to purchase it again. Students will also need a 3-ring binder to keep their journal pages.
