Class Experience

In this class students will learn different types of notes found in music (I.e. quarter not half not and whole note). First we will draw and learn the names of the notes. We’ll then practice by clapping or singing a combination of notes to see if we’ve really got it. This class is primarily listen and repeat. At the end we’ll try and see who knows their stuff by typing answers to my questions in the chat! Last we’ll combine all the notes we learn into a song written by the whole class! This is the students time to find something fun to tap with, like spoons, pens, drumsticks or anything close! No previous knowledge needed as this is a beginners class.

Learning Goals

First time music students will learn the basics of rhythmic notes: quarter note, half note, and whole note.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music from Rollins College’s
Bachelor's Degree in Theatre Arts from Rollins College
When people say “teaching isn’t a skill” they clearly haven’t met my family. Three generations later I found myself irresistibly pulled into the teaching world.
All things music and drama are covered under the umbrella of classes I offer. Big workshops covering general information on the art of performing or reading music are just as important as small individualized instrument lessons or dissecting monologues. I aim to teach the next generation of artists things I wish someone would have taught me sooner.
My professional background includes graduating from Rollins College with a degree in Liberal Arts. There I majored in Music and theatre with a concentration in performance. I started teaching in Florida around 2012 and have been doing so on and off since then. The past three years I have been teaching instrument lessons and vocal performance classes in Manhattan. I have individual lessons including guitar, piano, ukulele and voice. I have also taught acting and vocal performance classes.
As a teacher there are three things I find to be the most important. The first is you have to find a teacher that works for you. Not all teachers and students click. As someone who once was a student I understand this and push the importance of finding a teacher that really speaks your language.
The second is that I strive to cover multiple learning styles when I’m teaching. In school I was a kinesthetic visual and an auditory learner. This helped me understand the value of teaching with methods that employ all three.
Lastly I want to emphasize the importance of developing a relationship with the student. I create a classroom that is both warm and inviting. I cannot stress enough the importance of a student being comfortable around their teacher. It is necessary if the goal is for the student to really open themselves up to learning. With that I hope to have the opportunity to share in art and learning with you!
