The students will learn fundamentals of Mexican ballet folklorico in footwork and skirt work. They will gain an appreciation of the regional dance from the state, region or era of Mexican cultural and traditional dance.
Class experience
I would like to begin our meeting with a brief introduction of all involved. I am a "positive reinforcement" teacher. I love giving those compliments. I encourage and involve each of the students and offer times, as well as encourage, questions. First of all, ensure that there is ample space to move. Our goals are to be able to achieve an understanding of the basic dance steps of folklorico technique and movement relative to the regional dance. I'm hoping to end each class with each child leaving with little or no questions to bring to the next class. I want to be able to have answered all their questions.
I have been teaching dance for over 30 years in my private studio, in the public school system, private cultural arts organizations and within advanced education (local community college system). I have received (decades ago) instruction from maestros from Mexico as well as fabulous local instructors.
Homework Offered
It will be recommended that the students practice the techniques and dance steps taught. It should be 20-30 minutes each time they rehearse. Combining and coordinating upper and lower body is the main focus of homework recommendation.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
We will show fellow students what we've learned! I will assess each student individually so that I may validate their progress or make corrections. This will be conducted in a positive and reinforcing manner of demonstration for others in the classroom.Grades Offered
Hard-soled shoes are recommended. A full two-circled skirt or VERY wide ankle-length skirt is required as well. It is recommended to set up your dance space for class on a non-carpeted floor. Ensure that you have adequate space to allow for dance movement so that you do not hinder the full potential of your movement. Turning and pivoting are part of the class. (Please ask me if you would like to order ballet Folklorico skirt or the dance shoes. Skirts are $45-55 and Shoes are $40-55. Boys need hard soled shoes or boots as well. Pants must not drag on floor. Boys dance boots "botines" cost $50-75. Please utilize active or aerobic wear. Don't forget your water bottle and possibly a towel for some sweat!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents are needed to observe the child so that they may aid in guidance to advance their skills with a bit of rehearsal/practice during the week so that their skills advance with strength in their legs, timing, intensity and coordination. A reminder to parents - This is a physical course with a fitness routine. As in any activity, there could a potential hazard should there not be adequate workout space or proper footwear. Please ensure you provide your child with a water bottle and adequate stretching beforehand. Please be advised that injuries can occur if not properly supervised
