US Grade 9 - 12
In our experience, we have found that a lot of students will struggle to solve word problems, even when they understand the concepts required to solve. This is usually because they will feel overwhelmed with the information provided and find it a challenge knowing where to start. That is why we designed this class! In this class, students will learn proven techniques to problem solving and gain the confidence to tackle any word problem that comes their way! This will be an interactive class format, the teacher will present word problems and discuss them with the students. They will break the problem down together by identifying the information that has been provided, the information they need to find and the method they need to use to find it. The focus of this course is solving word problems, rather than learning the topics required to solve. For example, if the word problem requires the use of slope-intercept form, the time will be spent discussing how to solve the word problem using slope-intercept form, rather than learning what slope-intercept form is. For this reason, each week students will be provided with practice knowledge problems to work on and/or videos to watch before class to ensure that they are comfortable with applying the concepts required for the weeks word problems.
Learning Goals
Students will learn proven techniques to solving multi-step word problems.
