Homework
4+ hours per week. Serious clarinet players practice for at least one hour every day and are continually preparing for major performances and auditions! Practice sessions will be structured differently for every student and will be highly personalized. It will be your responsibility as the student to monitor your daily practice and stick to our plan for the week. I will certainly know if you have not been practicing ;)Assessment
These will mostly be scale quizzes!Grading
Grading a music class is extremely hard to do and has been a discussion amongst music educators for decades. I'd like to keep our grades simple and only grade scale quizzes!Class Experience
My lessons will be structured to make you the best clarinet player possible! We will explore different styles of music and find music you are truly passionate about in the clarinet world. At Ithaca College, I learned about the fundamentals of clarinet technique, tone production, the anatomical science of air support, famous clarinet works, and much more! Here's a skeleton of topics and concepts that might be included in our first few weeks of work... First, we will get started with Rhythm Reading and How to Build a Proper Embouchure. These are important foundational skills for clarinetists because we so often play technical rhythmic melodies, whether it's the Mozart Clarinet Concerto or a fast pace Polka. Second, we will work on Note Reading in Treble Clef and Air Support. With a lot of practice, these two skills can be mastered very quickly. Our music tends to use a lot of fast moving notes in all ranges of the instrument, so our note reading skills must be locked in! Third, we will take a look at Articulation and Chromatic Notes. My biggest saying for articulation will always be this... "tip of the tongue to the tip of the reed". That is the golden rule for all clarinet articulations! Lastly, we will explore how to incorporate musicality into our playing. This will apply to scales, etudes, finger wiggles, solo repertoire, ensemble music, orchestral excerpts, and much more. We will listen to clarinetists from all over the world, evaluate their playing, and consider ways to incorporate what we hear into our own playing. If you are ready to start your journey to becoming the best clarinetist you could possibly be, please don't hesitate to reach or sign up for a free trial class!
Learning Goals
Every musician is a musician for a different reason. Some strive to be the best possible players/performers in the world, and some are just not that serious about it. And that's okay!
I want to tailor learning goals for each of my students individually, and I encourage us to have a conversation about what your long-term goals are, so that we are on the same page from the start!
