Class Experience
If your young reader is having some struggles with oral reading fluency, have them join with a friendly teacher (and a great big dog) to practice their reading in a one-on-one online setting. Schedule: Our first session will include having your child reading a brief oral fluency assessment for their age and grade-level in order to establish a "baseline" for their oral reading ability. In this single week session we will meet daily for 20 minutes. . Daily greetings and check-ins will be followed by sight word review, vocabulary introduction and student read aloud. I will be using "Henry and Mudge The First Book" by Cynthia Rylant to have your student practice their oral reading skills. Each day we will read a "chapter" or two to build confidence and excitement for reading. This fun early reader book provides ample opportunities for sight word practice and the short phrasing chunks provide the chance to fine tune reader's prosody or rhythm in reading aloud. Our goal by the end of the week is for your reader to build their confidence in reading aloud.

As a veteran public school teacher, I had the chance to work with some outstanding students and I saw, first-hand, the importance and "payoff" of creating a reading lifestyle. For many students, finding that book that will "hook" them on reading is still a crazy idea, but I've helped many students do just that.
I believe that each student can enjoy reading and writing - it's just a matter of finding the material and medium that interests them. Students' interest should be valued and helped to grow in new and interesting ways. After all, if you're not interested are you really invested?
I worked for 12 years in a great district before relocating with my family. I've taught Kindergarten, second and sixth grades; in both regular education positions and learning support positions. I earned my B.A. in English from Penn State (WE ARE!), and my M. Ed. in Instructional Leadership from Neumann University. Reviews
