Class Experience

Hello! I'm a certified elementary school reading specialist with 24 years experience, including 11 years as a Reading Recovery teacher. I will provide small group reading and writing for your rising 1st grader.  The course outline is as follows:

Week #1:
- blending & segmenting sounds using pictures
- review all consonant letter-sounds and short a
- review 1 and 2 letter sight words
- read a F&P (Fountas & Pinnell) level A book together, taking turns on pages as students are comfortable

Week #2:
- blending & segmenting sounds using pictures
- review all consonant letter-sounds, short a and short i
- review 2 letter sight words
- read a F&P (Fountas & Pinnell) level B book together, taking turns on pages as students are comfortable

Week #3:
- blending & segmenting sounds using pictures
- review all consonant letter-sounds, short a, short i and short o
- review 2 and 3 letter sight words
- read a F&P (Fountas & Pinnell) level C book together, taking turns on pages as students are comfortable

Week #4:
- blending & segmenting sounds using pictures
- review all consonant letter-sounds, digraphs, short a, short i, short o, short u and short e
- review 2 and 3 letter sight words
- read a F&P (Fountas & Pinnell) level CD book together, taking turns on pages as students are comfortable

All of these will be done in a fun, low-pressure/high encouragement setting. I look forward to helping your child get ready for 1st grade!

Learning Goals

Students will review letter-sounds, sight words and have guided reading practice to prepare for 1st grade.

Hello! I've been a public school elementary reading specialist near Buffalo, NY for 26 years and I just love it! I have a BA in Elementary Education from SUNY Geneseo and a MA in Reading, Language Arts and Literature from The Ohio State University. I also recently obtained an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology and New Literacies. I'm a lifelong learner! 

Over the course of my career, I've taught Reading Recovery for 11 years and have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham method. I'm currently working on getting accredited at the Associate level of Orton-Gillingham teaching. My teaching approach is specific, efficient and fun! On Outschool, I tutor elementary school students in reading & writing, teach small group reading sessions and run elementary book clubs to discuss fantastic books. I'm an avid reader (I have a yearly goal of reading 100 books) and I love to give other avid elementary readers a vehicle to share their love for books as well. I enjoy musicals, organizing and spending time with my big, bustling, blended family.
