1 hour per week. After each recorded lesson, students will record themselves finger spelling as they read and write 5 CVC words. This should take 5-10 minutes each time after the video time. I will respond to each video with praise and specific feedback! Students will also do a scavenger hunt to choose objects from their homes and practice finger spelling those sounds. Each week, they will search for 3 items that have the focus letter sound of the week in it.Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
Beginning readers are often told to 'sound it out' to attempt unknown words. While this can be helpful, the Orton-Gillingham based technique of 'finger spelling' is even more helpful. Finger spelling gives the beginning reader a motor component to 'sounding it out,' making it multisensory and multimodal. This class is most appropriate for learners who know their individual letter-sounds, but are not yet fluidly blending the letter-sounds into words. This is a skill that is often learned from mid-Kindergarten through the beginning of 1st grade. Each Monday, I will post a video of me teaching the class. The lesson format will be: 1. Reviewing consonant and vowel sounds already taught via a Google Slide presentation. Learners can first say the sounds along with me as I read them, and then I will replay the slides silently for students to practice them on their own. 2. I will model finger spelling 6 CVC (consonant--vowel-consonant) words, using the vowel sound taught that week. This will be via presentation in Google Slides (with me also on each screen to model the finger spelling). 3. I will model using finger spelling to write 6 CVC words. Learners will write the words along with me as they watch the video. In addition to the video, I will also post 5 words to for learners to read and write using finger spelling. Learners can record themselves reading and writing these words via video. These videos can be posted learner-to-learner. A scavenger hunt will also be posted each week to find items in their house that contain the vowel sound of the week using finger spelling. Each week, learners will interact with the teacher by: - watching the recorded course lesson - reading 6 words using finger spelling - writing 6 words using finger spelling After each lesson, learners will: - record themselves reading and writing 5 additional words using finger spelling My teaching style is fun, light and yet focused. Please see my profile and class videos for examples. I often have students high-five me, do a fist bump and 'kiss their brains.' I will respond to each video with praise and specific feedback! By the end of these sessions, learners will be able to read & write CVC words using finger spelling. I look forward to helping your learner!
