Class Experience

This class is the third in a series of "Game Design with Scratch". Learners must take Game Design 1 and 2 in order to enroll in this class. We will be using coding techniques and patterns learned in the first two classes.

We will be making 2 games:
- a side-scrolling game (like Flappy Bird) where the hero has to avoid obstacles by moving up and down. With levels!
- a Role Playing Game (RPG) where your character searches for hidden "treasures", and the scene changes as they enter new rooms

We will learn to use broadcast to synchronize multiple sprites, and how to use sprites as entrances to rooms and as scrolling backgrounds. We will use variables more to keep score, add levels, change difficulty, etc. Plus you'll add more Game types to your Game Design skills, and be able to take these games as models to make your own.

This class is 6 weeks long, and we will build 2 games, spending about 1.5 hours on the scrolling game and 4.5 hours on the RPG. Learners will be given opportunities to collaborate with each other to create more compelling and detailed games. I'll challenge learners to put their own individual stamps on these games and to start creating their own game.
Learning Goals
I focus on the elements of the computational thinking framework.
Concepts: sequences, loops, parallelism, events, conditionals, operators, and data
Practices: experimenting, testing and debugging, reusing and remixing and abstracting
Perspectives - creating and expressing, connecting with others, questioning.

In the RPG game, learners together will devise the RPG game quest, and learn how to use variables and broadcast together to keep track of state and to synchronize multiple sprites.
