Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
Now that you've learned how to use the sensors from the Yahboom WOM Sensor Kit, let's build some robots!

This ongoing class will build upon itself, in that we will build a robot one week, and code the robot the next. Learners should start the class on a build week.

(Build Weeks) We will follow the lego-like build directions and build a robot during class, discussing the mechanical design and sensor usage of these robots.

(Code Weeks) We will code the robots, learning the purpose of each module, and how they integrate together to make the robot work successfully.

Week of May 12 - Build the "Interactive box"
Week of May 19 - Code the "Interactive box"
Week of May 26 - Build the "Moving Basket"
Week of June 3 - Code the "Moving Basket"
Week of June 10 - Build the "Automatic Door"
Week of June 17 - Code the "Automatic Door"
Week of June 24 - Build the "Sunflower"
Week of June 24 - Code the "Sunflower"
Week of July 1 - Build the "Flying Penguin"
Week of July 8 - Code the "Flying Penguin"
Week of July 15 - Build the "UFO Catcher"
Week of July 22 - Code the "UFO Catcher"
Week of July 29 - Build the "Color Sorter"
Week of Aug 5 - Code the "Color Sorter"

This schedule will be updated with additional robot builds continuing into August and September!

During the building weeks, I will display the building directions on screen, and will build along with the learners. In coding weeks, we will be using makecode.com to demonstrate how to code the robots, and learners will follow along on their makecode editors.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to integrate multiple sensors in a robot.
Students will learn how to effectively build robots that move, using servos (motors) and attachments - typically the most challenging part of building robots.
Students will learn to write code for robots that senses the environment and reacts to it.
