Fun With Wikki Stix - Square Shapes! (One-Time Class) This virtual class for ages 4-8 will meet 1 time, for thirty minutes. We will use wax sticks to create fun, two dimensional, geometric square shapes. Note: Please see the Supply List for the required supplies you will need, including your own set of Wikki Stix. *Learners may re-use / recycle older Wikki Stix if you have them. In this fun-filled class that combines math and art, students will develop their creativity and eye-hand coordination as they manipulate wax sticks to create a variety of square geometric shapes in different colors, sizes, and designs. They will also practice finger dexterity while they "work". But it will feel more like play than work. They will explore different concepts about squares, such as angles, straight lines, and 4 equal sides as they use wax sticks to design their polygons for their arts and crafts project. It will be a fun time for them to learn by doing a hands-on activity. As they design their project, I will demonstrate with my own wax sticks how to use them to create their picture. And they will have some opportunity to socialize while they create. This is a participation class where learners can get involved and be creative. During this online learning experience, students will be engaged in hands on activities that spark curiosity and artistic skills. By the end of the class, students will have learned how to create square shapes in several different designs, sizes, and colors and how to incorporate those shapes into their own art and craft project using colorful wax sticks to form a picture. They will learn about how to form a picture with these materials. They will be able to identify some basic geometric square shapes. I will be using a variety of modalities to accommodate a variety of learning styles. For example, I will address auditory learning by speaking about concepts, visual by showing illustrations and demonstrating how to create the picture, and tactile by having students use their hands to form the shapes and make the picture. This small, online course is a great addition to any homeschool program for preschoolers and it helps to prepare learners for Kindergarten through Second Grade. We will cover how to use the materials in various colors to make shapes and designs. We will cover the concepts for a square shape and talk about how to make it in different sizes and designs. Other topics addressed will be straight lines, corners, and angles. We will also talk about how to combine shapes to make another picture. I’m so excited to meet your child and start this new adventure with them!
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
~Learners will be working with materials that could become a choking hazard if used inappropriately. Due to small parts, Wikki Stix are not recommended for children under the age of 3 years old.
~Adult supervision and approval is required for students to handle the wax sticks in order to ensure the safety of each student.
~Please take appropriate precautionary measures regarding your child's participation.
~Parental approval and supervision is required for use of the materials. Please read all instructions and cautions on the package thoroughly prior to the class to ensure the health and safety of your child.
~Adults who are supervising are asked to remain present, but off camera, during class.
Students will need to have the attention span and ability to stay engaged for the full 30 minutes of class. Younger students may need prompting from a grownup to encourage them to stay engaged. My goal is to use activities that will take care of that, but each child is unique in his or her interests.
Supply List
~ Each student will need a printed copy of the image I will upload for the class, printed on 8.5x11 inch paper. ~ An extra blank sheet of paper. ~ A pencil. ~ A ruler. ~ A pair of safety scissors. ~ Crayons. ~ Each student will need their own set of colorful Wikki Stix or another brand of wax sticks. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi,
Thank you for visiting my page!
I’m excited to get to know you and I hope to have your learner in one of my classes sometime soon!
I have an interest in a wide variety of topics and I like to learn about many things. My goal is to instill and foster that same desire to learn in the students that I work with. I have worked with children for over 15 years. Regardless of the age of the learner, I hope to make the lesson fun and intriguing.
The subjects that I teach vary widely, according to my many interests. Some of them include reading, math, language arts, circle time, science, history, geometry, dissection, tv broadcast, video production, dance, and forensics. I enjoy being able to connect lessons, subjects, and activities with a theme.
I have an MS in Curriculum and Instruction for Elementary Education. I earned and maintained my Professional Teaching License from 1998 - 2018. My area of endorsement was Elementary Grades 1-8. I love using those skills to create lesson plans that are engaging and stimulating.
When I teach, I use a variety of modalities to accommodate a variety of learning styles. In this way, I am able to address multiple learning styles such as auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. I try to engage as many of the senses as possible. I feel that student participation is an important component of learning that facilitates comprehension and interest.
In my free time, I like to watch movies, go on short hikes, dance, and sing. I pursue a gluten free lifestyle. So I like finding foods and recipes that fit into my pursuit of healthy meals and snacks.
I look forward to meeting your learner! I can’t wait to see what kind of discoveries we make together!
