1 hour per week. Every week I will expect learners to demonstrate the shading technique I cover in class. I advise that learners keep a sketchbook so that all of their learning is in one place. Certain techniques will require more time than others, so homework will vary. Some weeks it may take two hours another weeks it may take half an hour.Assessment
I do not like to assign grades to art because it can be so personal. I will provide detailed feedback based on photos the learners send me. If learners do not send me photos of their art I will not be able to provide helpful feedback.Class Experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Intermediate Level
I will be teaching intermediate level art, ideal for junior high and high school aged art students. Learners should have some experience drawing, even if it's just for fun. Learners should enjoy art and have motivation to learn/improve. Learners who take this as an ongoing class will develop as artists over time and learn a variety of fundamental art skills such as, basic drawing, rendering, lighting, pencil shading, coloured pencil shading and pen & ink shading (pointillism, hatching, crosshatching, contouring, pointillism, scribbling, pattern shading) I believe in teaching by example. This means that I will demonstrate each techniques via video and explain the process verbally as I go. Depending on the style, these videos/weekly lessons will range in time depending on the drawing style from 1-1.5 hours a week. I will also upload my own art every week so learners can see the final product. Every week will consist of 2 video lessons. Every week I will demonstrate a different shading technique by drawing a sphere and then jumping into drawing an object. Each week the object I draw will be different. Learners do not need to draw the same thing as I do, but I will encourage them to use the same techniques I teach to draw their own picture. I will expect learners to send me photos/scans of their drawings so that I can provide feedback as needed. learners can reach out at any point for feedback on artwork or if they have questions

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Alberta College of Arts and Design
I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my learners. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.
I’ve been teaching art for over 6 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.
I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director/creative director for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.
I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.
For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.
Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
