Homework
1-2 hours per week. After every class I will give an optional homework assignment that reflects the lesson we had that week. This homework should take 30 min to an hour. I will recommend that learners keep a sketchbook and draw in it at least once per week.
Assessment
I will provide written feedback after the student sends me a photo of their artwork in the classroom area. I will provide feedback about the over all artwork and also break it down into: - Composition - Lighting - Technique - Color blending/application - Creativity

Class Experience

This is a one on one class. I will be advanced level art, ideal for portfolio building and high school students.

It will be different for each learner. I will lean into the learners interests and skills to help them reach their own creative goals or simply become a more skilled artist.

Conversations will be flowing and questions can be asked freely. The learner will have my full attention! Because I only have one learner, I will let their need determine the flow of the class.

I LOVE teaching one on one. It gives me an opportunity to form a better relationship with the learner and teach them exactly what they need to know.

At the end of the class the learner should have learned at least one new painting/drawing skill/technique or refined an existing art skill.

I can teach a variety of acrylic and watercolour painting techniques. I also teach drawing skills such as cartooning, rendering, perspective, shading, lighting using pen and ink, markers, pencil and/or pencil crayons.

I believe in teaching by example. This means that I paint/draw along with the learner, show them different techniques and explain the process as we embark on our creative journey. This class can accommodate all skill levels. I can teach art from scratch or help a learner develop a portfolio for college art applications.

NOTE: Before our first class I will reach out to the artist and guardian to discuss learning goals, skill level and to (ideally) see some artwork. Attached is a form that the learner can fill out to help me help them.

Learning Goals

Learner goals will depend on what the learner wants to do. Regardless of the learner goals I will teach art fundamentals such as lighting, shading, perspective and composition.

Learners should all improve as artists as the classes progress. This means that they will develop a better understanding of lighting, composition, visual storytelling, and develop or refine specific art techniques.

I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my students. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.

I’ve been teaching art for over 5 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.

I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director (now creative director) for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.

I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.

For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.

Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
