Class Experience

The teacher will be monitoring the progress of each student by making suggestions for improvement. The gamification of the class allows the learners to learn and have fun through a video-game-like atmosphere.

The class must be attended through Outschool's Zoom in order to receive participation points.

REQUIRED: "QWERTY" keyboard required connected to a laptop or desktop. Look at the left-top-side of your keyboard. See if the top row spells out "QWERTY". If it does, you have the correct keyboard for this class. Tablets do not work too well.

BACKGROUND: The class will type and read the story about Lauren. Lauren is all nervous before her big flight test. Join her and her helpful friend on a journey to find the confidence she needs to go solo.

The teacher will be following along with the learners' activities. Whenever the learner experiences any difficulties, the teacher will discuss the students' performances through chat-sessions to give encouragement and recommendations.

The class structure, each week, will consist of:
1. Key Introduction:  A score-free practice environment which provides written instructions on the correct finger placement;
2. Dynamic Lessons:  The lesson’s content will reflect the student’s progress each time;
3.  Videos: Students are taught about keyboarding, proper posture, and the importance of taking breaks while working on a computer;
4. Games: Each game is focused on improving different typing skills.

The learners will earn badges throughout the course. They will also receive a Certificate of Participation in this class.

Through 1 meeting each week, the following will be taught:

Week 1: Introduction & Home Row on the Keyboard: Students will learn about touch typing, be able to find the bumps on the f and j keys, and learn proper hand placement on the home row.
Week 2: Top Row: Students will learn the motion required for each finger to travel from the home row to the top row.
Week 3: Bottom Row: Students will learn the motion required for each finger to travel from the home row to the bottom row.
Week 4: Basic Level 1: Students will practice the entire lowercase alphabet and build accuracy, endurance, and speed.

Certificate of Completion given to the students after the last class has been completed.

The class is based on the following Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.2; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.3; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.10 AND With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.
